Francisco Liriano had a no-hitter through five innings but the bullpen faltered twice as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals 8-5 in the series finale Sunday at Comerica Park.
Liriano never made it out of the sixth inning, losing his no-hitter on a solo home run by Whit Merrifield. Reliever Alex Wilson entered, walked the bases loaded and then gave up a mammoth, 425-foot grand slam to Abraham Almonte.
The Tigers fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, but the bullpen gave up three more in the top of the seventh. Drew VerHagen walked two of the first three batters he faced and then Mike Moustakas extended his hitting streak to 14 games by launching a three-run home run off Buck Farmer.
The Tigers (9-11) and Royals (5-15) split the two-game series. They'll meet again in 10 days in Kansas City.
WORTH NOTING
* The Tigers announced 19,034 tickets sold for Sunday's game. Unlike some of the games early this season, it appeared that many of those fans were actually in the seats.
Sunny, 60-degree weather probably had a lot to do with what was probably the best crowd since Opening Day.
* Francisco Liriano had already thrown 79 pitches through five innings, so the prospect of finishing his no-hitter seemed slim. (It quickly became a moot point, of course). Liriano threw 123 pitches in his no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox on May 3, 2011. He walked six and struck out just two in that game.
* Tigers pitching coach Chris Bosio threw a no-hitter 25 years ago today for the Seattle Mariners against the Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox weren't no-hit again until Saturday, when Oakland Athletics pitcher Sean Manaea pulled off the feat.
* Before Almonte's grand slam, the Royals were 0-for-15 this season with the bases loaded, the only team without a hit.
* Dixon Machado led off the seventh inning with his eighth double of the season, moving into a tie for first place in the American League with Mookie Betts.
Alex Wilson entered and walked Paulo Orlando after getting ahead of him 0-2.
Then came a bullpen meltdown.
Abraham Almonte then bashed a 91-mph fastball 425 feet into seats in right field ? grand slam home run. According to ESPN Stats, the Royals were 0-for-15 with the bases loaded before that home run.
Wilson has allowed five runs over his last five appearances, covering 4 2/3 innings.
Wilson has allowed three home runs this season ? all three were lead-changers.
Alex Wilson: worst reliever in baseball?
While this seems hyperbolic, the numbers don?t lie. Wilson has allowed more barrels per batted ball event than any other pitcher in baseball (minimum 25 batted balls), and that number likely went up with Almonte?s grand slam today. His ERA is now up to 6.57, and would be higher were it not for two of those runners belonging to Francisco Liriano. Wilson?s usually excellent command hasn?t been there either ? he has five walks in just 12 1⁄3 innings this year.
Three of the five runs in the inning were charged to Liriano, who walked four and gave up the two hits. Tigers pitchers walked eight and four of those scored.
Right-hander Drew VerHagen walked a pair and was hastily removed by manager Ron Gardenhire ? who saw walks fuel the Royals? rally in the sixth.
Right-hander Buck Farmer, who had allowed only one run in his last seven outings, entered and hung a 2-2 change-up to left-handed hitting Mike Moustakas. He pounded the ball on a high arc over the right-field wall and onto the Belle Tire sign.
Castellanos had three hits including an RBI single in the first. Candelario knocked in the Tigers? first run with a double in the first.
Liriano had given up four walks through the first five innings before giving up the home run to Merrifield. Cheslor Cuthbert followed with a double.
Liriano came out after giving up a walk to Jorge Soler, putting runners on the corners with one out. Liriano allowed three runs on two hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out six.
Liriano threw a no-hitter for the Twins at the White Sox on May 3, 2011.
Candelario finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Cabrera went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
Castellanos finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Castellanos hit .438 (7-for-16) in the series and .344 (11-for-32) on the homestand.
Martin, hit a pitch in the first inning, finished 0-for-3 with a run scored.
Dixon Machado finished 1-for-4 with his eighth double of the season.
Nick Castellanos, so hot right now.
After missing out on a three-homer day by just a few feet on Saturday, Castellanos had three hits and a pair of RBI in this game. He is batting .309 with an .821 OPS this season, and we?ll likely see those numbers improve next week with how well he is seeing the ball right now.
