Game 21 - Tigers @ Boston Red Sox - April 23, 2019 - Game 1 Double Header

Off season and throughout the season you certainly do. You stat out how crappy a player is or has been. I'm not ignoring his achievements, Miggy has been good for us. I don't see how we can bitch about Zimmerman or Harrison etc but no Miggy because he got a double. In his own thread I'll laud him all day but this is the game thread.

Struggling is one thing but he's not even getting too many good swings. He looks like he's 46 not 36. When can we get past "it's still early."

First, I was started by responding to Tom. Who despite his claims, goes out of his way to bash Miggy whenever he can. The same with Verlander when he was here. He is a hypocrite.

Again, I have changed my posting and you obviously haven't noticed. I certainly pointed out certain things in the off season, but point to one negative post since the season started.

Cabrera

Career Line Drive rate = 22.5%. 2019 = 25.0%

Career Hard Hit Ball rate = 39.6% 2019 = 51.7%

Contact with balls outside zone = 64.1% 2019 = 70.3%

Contact with balls inside zone = 86.7% 2019 = 85.4%

Percent of pitches seen inside the strike zone = 45.3% 2019 = 41.8%

This probably doesn't mean much to most. But it speaks volumes to some.

From a team perspective.

DET is 1st in MLB swinging at balls outside the strike zone (34.8%). Miggy is below that rate (33.6%).

DET is 1st in MLB in swinging strikes (49.3%). Miggy is at 46.8%

DET is 3rd in MLB at swinging and missing (12.6%). Miggy in 9.8% (10.0% career). Mercer and Jones are the only two with lower sing and miss rate.

BLUF. Despite your claims, there is no stat that can back up that claim. In fact, they contradict your claims. Yes, his power output has been down. At this point, that is going to effect his season totals.

There is a stat regarding the lift or elevation of batted balls, Launch Angle, and it has been dropping last year and this year.
This might be cause for Miggy not having any homeruns and more xbh's, and part and parcel of his back injury of herniated disks.

No one was tracking exit velocities or launch angles prior to 2015. So the historical/career total can be skewed.

His exit velocity is up slightly, but his launch angle is down.

M. Cabrera EV = 93.1 Career, 93.4 2019

A. Judge EV = 95.1 Career, 98.4 2019

M. Cabrera LA = 11.7 Career, 8.4 2019

A. Judge LA = 14.6 Career, 13.0 2019

As a guideline, here are the Launch Angles for different types of contact:
  • Ground ball: Less than 10 degrees
  • Line drive: 10-25 degrees
  • Fly ball: 25-50 degrees
  • Pop up: Greater than 50 degrees
Miggy has always been a "line drive" hitter and never really had a "upper cut" swing. So while his launch angle is down, it is not too much to the extent based on sample rate.

This is like rolling a dice and having one show up 3 out of 10 rolls. The next roll is still 1 in 6, and everything being equal, should normalize over more rolls (thousands). 2017 and 2018 were injury laden. 2018 was a very small sample. I am not making any claims until the sample rates increase.

One thing to point out, so far this year, Miggy has seen the least amount of pitches in the strike zone for his career. Is this a result of no protection? Why would there be less number of pitchers throwing him strikes? Or do the opposing team scouting reports tell them that the Tigers chase pitches, so when ahead never throw anything close?

J.D. Martinez Launch Angles

2015 = 16.0

2016 = 13.4

2017 = 15.2

2018 = 10.7

2019 = 13.6

As you can see, the deviation for this player in particular, as much as 4.5 in a year.

Another anamoly, Tommy Pham has 4 HRs in 2019. His average Launch Angle is 1.3 (career 6.3).

Tigers' first DH sweep in Fenway in 54 years. Just observing.

I'm not a hypocrite. I have been very consistent. I have bashed the Tigers from day one for signing Miggy, especially right after his MVP season and having 2 years remaining on his contract. I point out when he is doing poorly because it supports my opinion on the signing. Again, which I have said many times...I don't blame Miggy for signing the contract...he would have been a fool not to. The blame belongs to the Tigers...specifically, Mr I.

I'll repeat what I said on the old espn board. Tigers will not win a world series while he playing 1st base. And now that he is DH ing more. That one is becoming more true. And I was against the length of the new contract from the start. And remember there still TWO Thirty Two MILLION dollar seasons left as this contract was a little back loaded! His 2024, 2025 options are guaranted with top 10 finishs in previous year?s MVP vote, that could turn bad. Of course should he turn in a top 10 season could be ok.
