WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The battle for the shortstop position appears to be over – at least right now. Trey Sweeney is playing the majority of the games over Javier Baez.
Baez, until this week, has been the primary 3Ber, posting a +2 DRS. However, he made an error over the weekend that cost the Tiger a potential win.
Now he is playing more CF given that Ryan Kreidler was sent down. Jace Jung has been recalled to play 3B.
With the move to CF, the Tigers’ infield now only has 1 veteran infielder – Gleyber Torres.
In CF, Javy is a neutral (0 DRS) defender.
Which position would you prefer to see Baez play?

Which position should Javy Baez primarily play?

1. 3B

2. CF

Javy in center is fine for now. It comes down to who is hitting better as to if Jung sticks, or Malloy etc when Meadows and Vierling come back.

Considering how much better Detroit was when Meadows played last year 14 and 10 is encouraging having played SD, LA, and NY for 9 of those games.

this is pretty funny. The battle for SS is over? Sweeney has been bad at the plate and probably below average defensively (-1 DRS). Then calling Javy neutral as a defender in CF is also funny. He has played what, 27 innings out there? I will give Baez a lot of credit...he's being a good team player. I say play him at 3B when there is a LH pitcher and play him in CF otherwise (until Meadows gets back)

It's either good sport or you don't play. And if anyone should be a good sport it should be Javy with the way he's been playing the last 2 years.

If he is to progress like a top pick, he should be in AA this year. IMO, he should spend 1/2 of this season in AA if he is any good.
I don't think there is any correlation between "if he's good" he should be in AA. Not at 20. He's not Tatis Jr. Btw, he doesn't need to play in Toledo at all. Many good players never play above AA. So its not like you need to rush him to Toledo as quick as possible.

I agree that he doesn't need to play in Toledo. As far as playing in AA at a certain age, it does seem that the younger players taken in the top 5 should progress to AA quickly. They were taken that high because they are supposed to be great players...right? Look at Greene, he was playing in AA and AAA when he was 20. BTW...I saw that Langford is back. He sure would look good in a Tiger uniform right about now ;)

hopefully Clark will be here soon. It would be nice to hit one of these picks out of the park. Like HOF park !

Unless he's up next season, which I think would be a mistake, I don't see the need to promote him to AA this season. Esp. with Meadows in CF.

I don't think there should be a definite timeline. I think if he isn't being "challenged" at a level, that's when you move him up. The only way you learn is to get challenged.
