The Tigers had two on with one out in the ninth. But Hicks fouled out to the catcher and James McCann struck out swinging at a high fastball.
McCann hit a game-tying solo home run in the seventh for the Tigers. It should have been a two-run homer, but Jones had just been thrown out, trying to tag up from first after Hicks flied out to left.
The Tigers cut the deficit to 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when Hicks scored on a grounder to short by Dixon Machado.
JaCoby Jones smashed a lead-off triple in the 12th inning and then scored on John Hicks' surprise bunt as the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in extra innings.
The Tigers (13-16) took two of three from the Rays (13-16) this week. All three games were decided by one run.
James McCann tied the game in the seventh inning with a 414-foot shot to left field. The solo home run came just moments after JaCoby Jones was thrown out trying to tag up from first base on a fly ball to medium-depth center field.
Tigers starter Michael Fulmer endured a bumpy first two innings in which he walked two and hit a batter, but settled in and lasted through 109 pitches and six innings.
For the second consecutive night, the Tigers' bullpen played an important role in the win. Alex Wilson, Daniel Stumpf, Joe Jimenez, Shane Greene, Buck Farmer and Warwick Saupold combined for six scoreless innings after Fulmer's departure.
The Tigers were similarly held in check by Rays starter Blake Snell and a large cast of relievers.
Aside from McCann's home run, the Tigers only reached scoring position three times in the first 11 innings. They got two men on in the ninth inning, but John Hicks popped out and McCann struck out to end the threat. They went 1-2-3 in the 10th and 11th innings.
WORTH NOTING
Michael Fulmer didn't have his usual fastball command early, but it could have been worse for the Tigers. He allowed just one run in each of the first two innings to go with six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out five. He threw 109 pitches, 70 for strikes.
* Michael Fulmer had a forgettable start last month in Cleveland, when the Tigers were swept in four games by the Indians.
Take away that performance and Fulmer has a 1.39 ERA in 32 1/3 innings in 2018.
* Tigers reliever Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Fulmer. Since allowing a walk-off home run six days ago in Pittsburgh, Wilson has pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one walk and two singles and striking out four.
Hicks finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and RBI.
McCann finished 2-for-3, including his third home run.
Jeimer Candelario finished 1-for-5 ... Jones finished 3-for-5.
Machado went 0-for-4 with an RBI.
Victor Martinez finished 1-for-4.
Leonys Martin finished 0-for-5.
Nicholas Castellanos finished 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.
* Two of James McCann's three home runs this year (and 22 of 35 in his career) have come against left-handed pitchers.
In his career, McCann averages a home run every 17.2 plate appearances against left-handers and every 70.4 plate appearances against right-handers.
Hicks, starting at first base in place of Miguel Cabrera (left biceps spasms), helped limit the damage for Fulmer in the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Hicks tagged first on a grounder by Joey Wendle, then threw home to turn an inning-ending double play.
Machado made a leaping grab on a line drive by Carlos Gomez in the eighth.
Alex Wilson allowed one walk in one inning with two strikeouts.
Daniel Stumpf allowed one hit in ⅓ of an inning.
Joe Jim?nez got the final two outs of the eighth.
Shane Greene gave up one hit in the ninth.
Buck Farmer allowed one walk over two innings with two strikeouts.
Warwick Saupold struck out two batters in one inning.
