why did Carpenter pitch?

I Read that they were gonna need an extra starter by Thursday because of the doubleheader. So they decided to just take advantage of being able to have the 26th spot yesterday being that you get an extra guy for a doubleheader.

that doesn't make sense. They haven't even been through the rotation yet. The doubleheader shouldn't matter.

Fulmer's start would be Thursday and that would be too early for him.. Sunday to Thursday wouldn't give him enough rest.. So pushing the starters back an extra day was needed.

b/c two SPs in the rotation pitching on the same day would have screwed up their near future scheduled starts. One would have had to pitch on shorter rest.

No, the one (regular rotation guy) wouldn't pitch on shorter rest. You would-then use the Toledo guy at that future time.

Who's to say there won't be more postponements in the next week. It's possible that the Carpenter start will have never needed to happen.

What if Fulmer got rocked(or injured) and only lasted 3 innings? Then you need another 5 innings out of a BP on the day of a double header. Wilson not available because he threw 60+ pitches 2 days before. Why risk jacking up your rotation on the first series of the season?
