Okay I get that now. I'd still say that they trade him. Another team would scarf him up in a hurry.

It's still harder than it sounds. Even though the receiving team takes back less than the full contract, NFL contracts are normally structured to be cut or re-negotiated before they end. In Calvin's case, we backloaded the hell out of his contract. So even though a team trading for him gets a slight discount, keeping him for any length of time jumps right into his gigantic base salary years (essentially the least valuable part of his contract).
