Game 5: Lions @ Packers *Monday Night* Thread

I think what bothers me the most about last night's stolen game is that I knew it was coming.

I have a group of Browns fans that I have a sports group text thread. I texted an hour before the game this "If you guys think the Browns got screwed by the refs, wait until tonight for the Lions to get screwed on national tv vs the golden boy Aaron Rodgers."

I know we had opportunities to win the game despite bad calls but when you know you have to blow teams out otherwise the refs will steal every game vs quality opponents is frustrating.

It's a joke dude. A complete fucking joke!!! We have to be up by 4 TDs to get a fair shake in the NFL or we're gonna get fucked!!! I'm sick of it.

This is close to true, that would not have been a close football game last night with even calls.

20 of Green Bay's points last night came off from drives extended by dubious penalty calls. Lions had a drive that they had to settle for a FG because replay overturned the Johnson catch. They had the missed PI that would have given the Lions the ball at the 25 of GB, that's at least 3.

That game should have been like 30-6 or 27-10. It should not have been close. So yeah, the Lions didn't make some plays, but basically they blew GB out without the key calls on all but 1 of GB's scoring drives.

I get so tired of the well if they would have scored TD's instead of FG's if so and so wouldn't have dropped the pass etc etc.. Hey the Lions held the Packers to FG's also, their guys had dropped passes too. The argument is basically saying well if the Lions would have played more perfect it shouldn't matter that the REF kept GB drives alive with that directly lead to touchdowns the Lions should be able to beat the other team and the ticky tacky phantom flags every week otherwise they just aren't a good team.

That is just fucking ludicrous the NFL is a GD joke. It's rigged for entertainment purposes only.

Agree, the Lions basically outplayed Green Bay by about 20 points last night, but some people are in effect saying, well, you should have outplayed them by 25 points if you wanted to win. Lions played well enough to win by 3 scores even with the FGs over TDs, the officials flipped the outcome by about 20 points.

All this bullshit about deciding it on the field and the lions only scored fg is horseshit. They did plenty to win this game. Offensively and defensively. Yeah we want more touchdowns. But like what was pointed out to me. The Packers are playing defense also. So all this narrative of scoring more offensive points is horseshit. 3rd and long up 9 the lions forced a sack or a incompletion ( I forget) , The packers would have to punt. The whole outcome of this game was changed by the refs last night, and those 2 hands to the face calls. Plus it wasn't just those 2 calls. What a crock of shit. Now the Lions probably have to go 8-3 or 9-2 just to even have a sniff at the playoffs.

Flow chart from the free Press was funny. They had a tad better graphics.

Flag > Does it help Detroit? No flag.

Flag> Does it hurt a Detroit? Yes throw the Flag.

The NFL twitter account had almost 8 tweets in a row celebrating the Packers win.

If the Lions had won, then there might have been a couple.

Pretty blatant BS.

Can we get an XFL franchise? Too bad that they tore down the Silverdome facility prematurely.

Not only that. Didnt the ref throw the flag really late in third first hands to the face ?

Don’t know if this has been posted yet, Q&A with the head official from last night.

Question: On the helmet-to-helmet contact with Tracy Walker, it appeared he was going for the ball. Does the defensive back have the right to go for the ball? Does that offset any incidental helmet-to-helmet contract?

Blakeman: “That’s a good question, but the reality is, it is strict liability for a defensive player. In this case, he may be going for the ball and not intending to hit the helmet, but when there’s helmet contact, it is a foul in that situations.”

Question: Even if he had come up with the interception, that doesn’t change the ruling in any way?

Blakeman: “Even if he did impact the helmet and then intercepted the ball, it would still have been a foul.”

Question: On the two hands-to-the-face penalties on Detroit defensive end Trey Flowers. I don’t know if you were the one who actually threw the flag there, but when discussing with the crew, what did you guys see on those calls?

Blakeman: “The umpire threw both of them. The last one was really the only one I’ve discussed with him. Basically, it’s for illegal use of the hands, hands-to-the-face foul. To be a foul, we basically need some forceful contact that’s prolonged to the head and neck area of the defender. So in his mind he had pinned him back, it was prolonged, and that’s what created the foul.”

Question: “You said head or neck area?”

Blakeman: “Head or neck area, yes.”

Obviously "head and neck area" extends down to the upper sternum when/where the Lions are involved.

How was our run game so lackluster against a poor run defense?

It was absolutely horrid, I was very surprised just how bad it was, had thought that was slowly getting better but damn that was just really bad. I don't know if it's the scheme, the RB's or the O-Line but damn something really need to be done about that. I suspect it's 90% O-Line as the joke, whatever it takes bring in a whole new line next year that performance will not win any games.

Why does he have his hand around/near his neck?

Because it's perfectly legal and if you've ever wore a pair of shoulder pads you'd know that they come up to your collarbone.

It does look like the OT sells it a little.

I'd say so, considering pushing up on that part of the shoulder pad does fuck all to your neck/head.

I'll support your insistence that the Lions needed to score extra points to counter the bogus calls but I draw the line at actually justifying the penalties. They were bad calls and shouldn't have been made. It's one thing to miss a penalty, I get that. But it's another thing entirely to "see" a penalty that didn't even happen. They literally made shit up. That's inexcusable. If you don't see his hand on his face, holster your flag and let the players decide the outcome of the game. This was the equivalent of diving in soccer or flopping in the NBA.

The Lions are 26th in the league averaging 3.8 YPC.

Defensively they are in the middle of the pack giving up 23.6 points per game, 27th in yards rushing per game, 27th in passing yards per game and 28th in overall yards.

I agree...he did flop. My point was that if you watch the replay in real time Flowers has his hand right on the neck and the head goes back. In real time I can see why the flag was thrown. The hand to the neck area and the head going back...probably gets a flag every time.

Maybe the Lions OL should start flopping, it certainly doesn't look like they can block!

Lions still need a bruiser vet RB to compliment KJ, they largely failed doing so last year with lackluster performance by Blount and especially this season due to poor performance by the since cut Anderson. and bupkis since. If Kerryon goes down ala last season, then they will be well and truly fucked for a run game.

Don't think that they need to revamp the entire OL, just add a FA or two that fits first year OC Bevell's schemes and/or maybe draft an OT/OG/NT in the 3rd and/or 4th rounds for development.

But they don't come up to your neck

If you grab the top of the shoulder pads your hand most certainly will be near the neck. Put your fingertips to your collarbone and ball up your fist. Anyone with hands bigger than Trump will be at or near the neck.

Won't work for Wagner. He can't get close enough to the defender to pull it off.
