NOTABLE:
First base umpire Joe West, the crew chief, summoned the grounds crew at the start of the third inning, apparently after determining the infield dirt around first base was too soggy.
Workers applied a drying agent to the dirt and the game resumed.
There was no rain in the area, so any wetness presumably came from the pre-game watering. The Angels are known for stealing bases (the Tigers are not), so it's possible West's request could have been prompted by the Angels dugout.
Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler was hit by a pitch on the ear flap of his helmet to lead off the third inning. Fortunately it was an Alex Meyer knuckle curve rather than a fastball. Kinsler didn't look thrilled at getting beaned, but he ran to first base and indicated he was OK.
Meyer might have been a bit rattled, because he promptly walked the next batter, Alex Avila, on four pitches. Kinsler came home to score the first run of the game when Victor Martinez grounded into a double play.
Since May 23, three call-ups from the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens have combined to throw 27 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. Farmer (13 innings), Warwick Saupold (10 1/3 innings) and Arcenio Leon (4 1/3 innings) have struck out 26 and walked just six during that span.
Farmer's 13-inning scoreless streak is the Tigers' longest since Matthew Boyd pitched 11 consecutive scoreless innings on April 11 and 16. Farmer replaced Boyd in the Tigers' rotation.
