The Tigers have now lost five games in a row for the first time since Aug. 12, 2016.
They're seven games under .500 for the first time since 2015, when they finished 74-87.
NOTABLE:
Verlander has thrown two no-hitters in his career. The first was 10 years ago this month, on June 12, 2007, at Comerica Park against the Milwaukee Brewers. The other came on May 7, 2011, at Toronto.
Justin Verlander was perfect. He blew through the first 16 Seattle Mariners he faced Wednesday night. He struck out 10 of those hitters in 5 1/3 innings and the Tigers were cruising, 4-0.
And then Jarrod Dyson dropped a bunt.
It was buckling curveballs and the best fastball command of the season and through five innings on Wednesday night at Safeco Field, it was a vintage look at Justin Verlander, who had that look in his eye.
He had his best stuff of the season, a bushel of strikeouts.
Verlander's final line: 5 2/3 innings, four hits, three runs, one walk and 11 strikeouts. The 11 strikeouts were his highest total of the season.
No Tigers pitcher has ever thrown a perfect game, although Armando Galarraga famously lost his bid for perfection in 2010 on a botched call at first base in the ninth inning.
James McCann opened the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning.
It was his eighth home run of the season. Upton drove in three runs on a pair of singles.
Upton has 48 RBIs this season, matching his mark through Aug. 21 of last season.
Verlander made a couple of mechanical adjustments since his last outing, the most prominent one being with his shoulders in his delivery.
“He made a little adjustment after looking at some video,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “His shoulders were a little uphill and he kind of flattened them out, and I think that made a huge difference in both the life on his fastball and the break on his curve ball.
Verlander's 11 strikeouts marked the 39th double-digit game in his career, tying him with J.R. Richard for 28th on MLB's all-time list.
