Miguel Cabrera batting 2nd after lineup shake-up.
Miguel Cabrera has started two regular season games in his career batting second. Both were in 2004 with the Florida Marlins. Virtually all of his career starts have come batting third or fourth.
This sure took long enough. Instead of wedging another hitter into the No. 2 spot with Alex Avila on the bench against a lefty, Ausmus has opted to bat Miguel Cabrera second for only the third time in his career.
Miggy will be followed by Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez in a lineup that many fans were hoping for from day one.
If it works — Richard’s platoon splits certainly hint it might — one wonders if Ausmus will keep it intact as the team returns to playing proper baseball with a designated hitter next week.
Ausmus said the move was for one day. After that, "we'll see what happens."
"We're not winning the other way, so let's mix it up a little bit," he said. "The truth is, you could put those names in a number of different orders, but that's way they came out of the hat and that's what we're going with."
Saturday nights game was the first time in the past 100 years that the Tigers lost consecutive games in which their starters pitched at least six innings and allowed two hits or fewer.
The last time the Tigers lost back-to-back games in which their starters allowed two hits or fewer was Sept. 27-28, 2013, at Miami, when Jose Alvarez allowed two hits in 2 2/3 innings and Sanchez allowed two hits in five innings.
Zimmermann re-found his old slider grip and that has been the main difference,'' Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "The slider went from being flat to having depth. It became more of a swing-and-miss pitch, a ground-ball pitch. Since he re-found that grip, it has coincided with his turnaround.''
Over Zimmermann's last four starts he has a 1-1 record with a 2.70 ERA.
Zimmermann hasn't allowed a run against the Padres in 15 consecutive innings. In his last outing versus San Diego, when with the Nationals, Zimmermann threw six innings of scoreless ball.
Since the calendar flipped to June, Zimmermann has 21 strikeouts to eight walks in 26 2⁄3 innings.
All-Time DETROIT leads 8-6.

Twenty two years later Kaline is a Baseball legend and will have set ML records, finishing in the top 5/10/15/20 in many offensive and defensive career leaderboards.
Kaline's throwing arm is considered one of the strongest in MLB history,
as well as the most accurate of all time.
