Unwelcomed wagon: Tigers dumped by Rangers to kick off home stand.

The Tigers are now 2-18 in the last 21 home games (not counting the suspended game against Oakland, which they were losing in the seventh inning). The Tigers have lost five straight, nine of their last 10 overall.
They?ve been outscored by (96) runs in those games and out-homered (44-12).

FOR THE RECORD. Al Avila failures as GM.
Totally Tigers

In one month, Al Avila celebrates 4 years in his General Manager position. Throughout his time, he?s come under a certain amount of criticism for his roster signings.

And unfortunately, we tend to remember the big busts and the most recent moves more than anything else.

But is this really fair? Afterall, this is the same guy who scouted Miguel Cabrera years ago and also was quick to recommend that Dave Dombrowski sign J.D. Martinez.

So how do we really evaluate our GM? Especially as next year, he moves into lame duck status as the GM, unless Chris Ilitch extends him.

I went back over the those past (almost) 4 years and tracked Avila?s signings. The major ones, that is. The ones that happened after Trader Dave, in his last moves as GM, sold off David Price, Yoenis Cespedes and others and got Matthew Boyd, Michael Fulmer and Daniel Norris, among others, in exchange.

One thing you do notice is the extraordinary number of signings of players with one thing in common. Older players, past their prime, trying to keep one toe in the game. And it?s disconcerting considering that the Tigers are saying that they are in rebuilding mode. Will that change next year? Will there actually be rookies advancing and taking their places?

It?s also pushed the average age of the Tigers? roster into the lower half of MLB with one that is older than almost 2/3rds of MLB. Something to keep watching as the organization tells us repeatedly about the youngsters getting ready to come up.

Returning to Avila?s signings, the best way to get an overall sense of how well he?s done,

Orioles ERA 5.88 BAA .274 WHIP 1.51 OPS .859 H 755 R 502 ER 455 HR 160

Tigers ERA 4.93 BAA .268 WHIP 1.42 OPS .803 H 698 R 407 ER 363 HR 112

ALED (-BAL) ERA 4.11 BAA .243 WHIP 1.29 OPS .727 avg: H 660 R 356 ER 327 HR 102

ALCD (-DET) ERA 4.42 BAA .253 WHIP 1.34 OPS .754 avg: H 670 R 366 ER 340 HR 101

Tigers are somewhat worse offensively overall, and the Orioles face slightly better offenses vs division. Orioles also face better pitching, so therefor Tigers ARE the weakest link.

Had to lol @ Shep, Petry, and Gibson talking up Zimmerbum's "encouraging" outing last night vs rangers, postgame...but that is what they are being paid to do, sweep the shit under the rug and polish those Tigers turds.

I have to admit, even though I didn't love the contract, I was somewhat excited when they signed him. He was coming off 4 good years in Washington where he averaged about 200 innings, 1.1 WHIP and an era around 3.20. I expected a slight drop off coming over to the AL, but he has been terrible!

No one would ever accuse the Tigers of not having their fair share of immediate or eventual busts out of SP/RP trades, FA signings, and contract extensions..cough...Sanchez...cough...D-Train...cough...Washedupburnt... cough...Robertson...cough...Simon...cough...Chamberlain...cough...Krol...ect.

I realize not every move a GM makes is successful, but I see very few that I would call successful or even "break even" moves.

I wasn't referring to the last 5 years ( I didn't make that clear) but the time since Mr. I passed. No I do not think Avila is a good GM but lately I think he has a directive from little I, don't spend. It's obvious.

Jeimer Candelario has been recalled from Toledo. Dawel Lugo was optioned back last night.

Tigers offense, total
.230 avg
.291 on base pct
.393 Slg
.294 wOBA
76 wRC+
-0.8 WAR

The entire lineup has produced at below replacement level.
This is 100 percent on the front office, and there is no excuse for it.

White shoes should be banned as an accoutrement of the Tigers' uniform. I think this would help them win more games.

Like I said strapped. Bunch of cheap crappy players.

I should then give you a list of the Brian Goodwin signings/trades that other teams seem to be able to make. Even Luke Voit was traded for two middling relief pitchers. Crappy signings is on Avila, not Chris.

Food for thought. Avila spent $15.5 MIL on four players this off season, none of which are currently healthy. And none have played much this season. When you do have money, you shouldn't spend it on worthless assets.
