Justin Verlander earned his first since May 20 on Tuesday, despite giving up three runs on five hits to start the game against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park.
Verlander settled in after the first inning, allowing zero runs, four hits and one walk over the next six innings. JV struck out six and had 14 swings-and-misses ? seven with his curve ball.
Bruce Rondon, in his second appearance since getting called up from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, pitched a scoreless eighth inning after Daniel Stumpf allowed a leadoff single to Eric Hosmer.
Closer Justin Wilson pitched a one-two-three ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.
NOTABLE:
Verlander had gone six straight starts without a win. He had a perfect game through five innings in his last start against Seattle but earned a no-decision.
The Tigers' bullpen has combined to pitch seven scoreless innings during the past two games.
Mikie Mahtook, who was 4 for 8 with three RBIs in his previous three games, had two more hits Tuesday.
Justin Upton's 23-game on-base streak was snapped Tuesday. He entered the game 29-for-85 (.341) during that stretch with nine doubles, five home runs and 26 RBIs.
Miguel Cabrera's third-inning home run was the 455th of his career, which is 37th in MLB history.
J.D. Martinez had a triple and home run -- his 13th of the season.
Sal Perez, a longtime nemesis of Verlander?s, gave a fastball a ride to deep centerfield with two outs in the fifth inning, but Mikie Mahtook made a fantastic catch, grabbing Perez?s drive with the heel of his glove while running into the wall.
He hung on and received a hearty hug from Verlander upon arriving at the Tigers? dugout. Mahtook, hitting second, recorded two hits.
Verlander gave way to Daniel Stumpf in the top of the eighth inning. Stumpf allowed a lefty-on-lefty single to Eric Hosmer and was relieved by Bruce Rondon, who allowed a single but struck out two batters to strand two runners.
Justin Wilson picked up his seventh save in eight tries in the ninth inning.
Nicholas Castellanos was called out for running out of the baseline and interfering with a throw in Saturday's loss in San Diego, and the same call was made against him in the second inning on Tuesday. This time, Ausmus didn't argue after Strahm's throw to first hit Castellanos and bounced away.
"The call was right, but I think it is a bad rule, and the umpires probably agree," he said. "If you draw a straight line from the right-handed batter's box to first base, it goes through fair territory, so you are asking those batters to run extra distance to get to the bag."

17-11 vs the AL Central
17-31 vs everybody else
I suppose if they keep beating teams in the div they might still be able to finish .500 and miss the second wild card by a couple few games.

If they continue at a .610 clip vs the AL central and a .310 clip against the rest of the league they will finish 74-88
with this team...that's very likely.

yes...it's sad. Unfortunately, I think the rest of the season will be doom and gloom with most of us just wondering about the future of this team. The further the season progresses the more I am interested in the possible trades that are to be made vs wins and losses.
