All-time DETROIT leads 76-72.

f'n kiermeir batting a buck fifty for the year, Tigers come into tampa and he turns into a lefty batting Willie Mays, triples, homeruns, fahhk.
1- 0 and rays still batting 3rd inning.

Zimmerman MVP! MVP!

By the way what time did the game start..

Or he wasn't used to pitching that much and ran out of stuff.

His last 2 games he had 96 and 97 pitches respectively and he gave up exactly one run in each of those games. If he would have stopped at 96 or 97 today he would have given up one run as well. Gotta get back to that pitch count!

You're missing my point. If his pitch count was higher maybe he would be more fresh at 100+ pitches.. Can't pitch 110 pitches if you never approach it. It's like asking a closer to pitch 6 innings.

I'm not missing your point...I just don't think it's a very good one. What's the point of having your pitchers pitch an extra 10 pitches if it's going to cost you runs?

You get use to pitching those extra 10 pitches and maybe those runs don't happen. That's how pitching works. You just don't start a pitcher on opening day that had no spring training and let him throw 100 pitches. Can't go 80 pitches for 20 starts and expect him to be able to go 95. Why'd those closer from the 70's go so many pitches.. They worked up to it.

forgot they were playing early today, used to be a time when I would always know exactly when they were playing each and every day. Now I just don't care..

LOL. Yikes, Tigers sure are losing a lot lately. JV on Sunday? anyone else hoping he throws a no-hitter against his former team? I wouldn't mind it.

Haha! That would be so fitting at this point.

For his career, Greg Maddux averaged 92 Pitches Per Game Started and yet he average almost 7 IP per Game Started (6.8 to be exact).

Additionally, it isn't about the number of pitches as much as the amount of stressful pitches/innings. They add up, even if a pitcher isn't approaching that "magical/mythical" 100 pitch count.

Bobby Cox basically never had his pitchers go over 120 pitches, let alone 110 very often. Glavine, Maddux, Millwood, Avery, etc, etc. Without extending them, they were fresher the next start and less likely to have arm injuries or tired arms. Assmus did not get that and he abused he starters. While I have other issues with Gardenhire, I have no issues with how he has managed the starters.

Career

Maddux 6.8 IP 92 P/GS = 13.5 Pitches per inning

Smoltz 6.7 IP 101 P/GS = 15.1 Pitches per inning
Glavine 6.5 IP 101 P/GS = 15.5 Pitches per inning

Avery 5.8 IP 90 P/GS = 15.5 Pitches per inning
Millwood 6.1 IP 97 P/GS = 15.9 Pitches per inning

Porcello 6.1 IP 96 P/GS = 15.7 Pitches per inning
Price 6.6 IP 104 P/GS = 15.8 Pitches per inning
Scherzer 6.4 IP 104 P/GS = 16.3 Pitches per inning
A. Sanchez 5.9 IP 97 P/GS = 16.4 Pitches per inning
Verlander 6.6 IP 109 P/GS = 16.5 Pitches per inning

Zimmermann 6.0 IP 93 P/GS = 15.5 Pitches per inning
B. Hardy 5.5 IP 85 P/GS = 15.5 Pitches per inning

F. Liriano 5.7 IP 93 P/GS = 16.3 Pitching per inning
M. Fiers 5.7 IP 94 P/GS = 16.5 Pitches per inning
M. Boyd 5.2 IP 90 P/GS = 17.3 Pitches per inning

D. Norris 5.0 IP 87 P/GS = 17.4 Pitches per inning

Nice comparison, using Maddux ;-) I appreciate your post but he was one of the best efficient pitchers .. The whole team was. He could get to 8+ innings on 100 pitches.
