Game 98 Tigers vs. astros July 15, 2018

Because JV started today, he is not allowed to pitch in the All-Star game, although selected. New ASG rule.

If Verlander was gonna get bombed, then I'm glad that it happened vs the Tigers, and not while starting in the ASG...again. The entire NL starting lineup batted vs his 1 IP 5 hits/runs 2 K/BB start in '12, and they nearly hit for the cycle, except for homering.

Other than his disappointing 5 World Series starts, going 0-4 (w/1 ND as an astro), Justin has been great in the postseason, with only 1 bad game vs rangers in '11 ALCS. His HoF black and gray inks have him as worthy of induction, but according to Jay Jaffe's JAWS WAR on BBR, he is still not there yet:

Starting Pitcher (64th):
61.3 career WAR / 44.2 7yr-peak WAR / 52.8 JAWS
Average HOF P (out of 63):
73.4 career WAR / 50.1 7yr-peak WAR / 61.8 JAWS

Nick Castellanos had 115 hits entering the game Sunday. That’s the third-most hits before the All-Star break in Tigers history. Miguel Cabrera had 132 hits before the break in 2013 and Al Kaline had 122 in 1955.

That is very surprising, given that the Tigers have had quite a few .300+ hitters in their history, most notably Cobb, who hit .400+ a couple times, Norm Cash, who hit .361 in '61, and Maggs-Polanco, who hit .363 and .341 respectively in '07. Plus Castellanos is hitting only .305 for the season.

After Liriano was removed for back spasms, Tigers relievers got 16 consecutive outs vs. the astros. What???

I would guess that most of the astros were looking forward to their time off for the ASB.

his career stats say otherwise. .209/.282/.587

A harder read with him.. he had 3 years of not playing between Texas and here - played decent when given the chance to get some at bats last year. Hasn't had enough PA in '18 to show what he can do.. or not do.

He's 33 years old. While he has only had about 1/2 of a season at the major league level he is what he is. A turd.

As long as he can win a game now and then, and is cheap .. I don't care if he's 43.

my point was he is 33 and only has about 1/2 of a season at the major league level. He's nothing more than an AAA player.

The league is filled with "nothing more than a AAA player." Nonetheless, he hit a home run, and as far as yesterday counts that's all that matters.

The before the all-star break rankings could be misleading though the Tigers have already played 98 games here at the so-called midway point. A full 17 more than the actual midway point. For example, let's look at Kaline 1955 number of games prior to the all-star break for the Tigers that year. 81

Although low sample size, Adducci leads DET with 4.58 Pitches Per Plate Appearances, followed by Candy and Niko.

He was also near the top in 2017 as well, behind Avila and Upton.

So he fouls off more pitches, before popping up or grounding/flying out? His OBP is very low, compared to slugging, so he doesn't walk much.

When you figured the halfway point for Kaline's 1955 season, did you do it after 77 games? 77 X 2 = 154 games.
Changed to 162 iirc back in 1961 with expansion.

just taking a lot of pitches doesn't mean he's a productive player. I'll take a guy that only sees 3.5 pitches per PA if he's getting on base.
