Game 98 Tigers vs. astros July 15, 2018

I haven’t been paying attention at all, but I just checked MLB.com and they are listing Verlander as the number one contender for the AL Cy Young this year, closely followed by his teammate Cole.

Since the tigers suck this season I guess a consolation it would be to see Verlander win his second Cy Young, virtually guaranteeing his entrance to the Hall of Fame which he probably is guaranteed already anyway. I can’t imagine he wouldn’t go in as a tiger.

What do you guys think?

I think at next years end when current contract with is up .. he'll have about 220-225 wins? 36 years old. So he could get 250-275, if healthy, for a career. 2-no hitters, Cy Young-MVP - plus some other things - yeah I can see a hall of fame player.

What other things?

That he banged Kate Upton?

Because that deserves some Hall of Fame consideration, right there.

Yes, you get the idea. Though I was also thinking his two 2nd place in Cy Young voting where he could have won both.. Though the one in 2016 should have been definite.

Non-save close for Greene....who promptly gives up a double.

Greene really isn?t that great, joe will be the closer next year

I actually prefer to get another closer and leave Joe at setup guy. Moving him to closer just means we'll going to hate him next season.

He won the ALCS MVP last year. I don?t know what other post season MVPs He has.

Again MLB.com get a survey of riders in right now he has the edge to win the Cy Young this year.

Obviously more post season successes could ensure both this season and in future seasons.

16 Ks and yet still win by 3.

Take that, JV...who might still have a chance to get even if he starts in the later season series vs Tigers @ CoPa.

But I am expecting a worse post-ASB record.

He's been good in the post season so it certain helps.. The thing with voters is many like to vote before the seasons over with and things can change quickly.. 2016 JV was smokin' those last 2 months and got jobbed.

If Tigers go on to win this game and hand JV a loss=their '18 postseason win. He gave up a likely ASG start to start this game.

Because JV started today, he is not allowed to pitch in the All-Star game, although selected. New ASG rule.

JV has started an all star game before hasn't he? Even if he hasn't today's game, though a loss for him, is more important than a meaningless game. Then he goes a long way between starts. It's easy to say now because he pitched poorly and got the loss..

Justin Verlander became the 5th pitcher to strike out 12+ while allowed 4+ home runs in a start since 1920,
and first time in ML history a pitcher had allowed as many as 4HR, combined with 0BB and 12K or more.

First since Colby Lewis in May 2012.

Verlander’s final line: Six innings, six hits, six runs (five earned), no walks, 12 strikeouts.

Verlander had twice previously allowed four home runs in a game, both times against the Indians.

Detroit Tigers' John Hicks HRs off Justin Verlander in Va. showdown.
Freep

Nick Castellanos had 115 hits entering the game Sunday. That’s the third-most hits before the All-Star break in Tigers history. Miguel Cabrera had 132 hits before the break in 2013 and Al Kaline had 122 in 1955.

The 12 strikeouts, though, pushed Verlander past two Hall-of-Famers on the all-time strikeout list: He’s at 2,588, passing No. 27 Bob Feller (2,581) and No. 26 Warren Spahn (2,583). He’s chasing No. 25 Tom Glavine (2,607).

The Tigers struck out 16 times on Sunday. In the last 25 games, they have fanned 222 times.

After Liriano was removed for back spasms, Tigers relievers got 16 consecutive outs vs. the astros. What???

The Tigers will go into the All-Star break with a 41-57 record.
The 2017 Tigers were 45-53 after 98 games.

LHP Matthew Boyd (4-8, 4.76 ERA) will open up the second half for Detroit against Boston. In his last start, Boyd allowed five runs on four hits and struck out eight in six innings.

Yeah he started the All-Star game and got lit up.

He didn?t pitch his normal way, Starting a little easier and throwing harder as the game went on. Instead he came out trying to throw 100 miles an hour and it backfired on him.

I think it was the season that the Tigers lost the World Series to San Francisco.

I remember that now - him coming out blazing it. Thanks.

What is so special about Jim Adduci, that the members of Motown Sports have taken to nicc him Deuce? Maybe its tongue in cheek, like Inge was on the Tigers ESPN messageboard a dozen years ago. I never registered for a membership there, but I occasionally have browsed the site's thread topics for many years now. Can't find out the reason for Adduci love though, and they are normally quite critical of Tigers players overall.
