Gavin Schilling

If there ever was a year to play some zone, this would be it

A small lineup is horrible for zone. You'd want to trap all game at least half court. Our best shot is running all game and I don't know if we've got the depth for that.

The benefit of the zone is that you keep the ball from getting inside and you protect people from foul trouble. We'll always push the pace but we can't control the pace on defense. of course they'll have to guard a smaller guy at the 5 when ward is out so that creates issues. We could see something similar to the Tony Bennet Pack line defense at UVA, of course that gives up open looks from 3, pick your poison.

Problem is there's NOBODY now at the 5 behind Ward. We'll have no one taller than 6-6 on the floor when he needs a breather or gets in foul trouble.

We need to find the next Austin Thornton (at Center not Guard). Come on izzo!!!

if you don't have long wings you'll get killed in a zone in college. We don't have long wings.

People in the program are hopeful that Schilling could return to practice in January and back on the court in February. If that's the case, it might be worth keeping him for an additional year, he won't be in full game shape and we'd struggle getting him back into the rotation. It obviously depends on where we are in the big ten title race and how we're developing. The football team will face a similar situation with Reschke this year

Sounds like it would be best to keep him for next year even if he came back in Jan.

we supposedly added a walk on who's 6;0". don't get our hopes up though

no update on Schilling as of practice yesterday, Izzo said he had his fingers crossed but wouldn't get specific.

Also, MSU did practice a lot of zone defense yesterday, maybe we do it for real this year.

probably not what gotime was talking about when he mentioned long wings.

that was a typo if you didn't figure it out, it was supposed to read 6'10". he may not be that tall but he's definitely taller than Goins, I wouldn't expect much if anything as far as contribution but at least we have a big guy on the scout team.

Izzo made a comment about Schilling today that he might be back by the start of Big Ten play. Said he'll be off crutches tomorrow.

Yeah, I figured it was an error and thought people might get a laugh out of the joke - plus without a name it's kinda tough to get the actual height and even tougher to get excited about a walk on taken in desperation might be one of our top front court options.

awesome - maxpreps' full description says "Plays basketball". sounds like a can't miss low post player.

Well we're looking at Matt Van Dyk getting minutes in the post so let's pray that this kid can at least walk and chew gum at the same time.
