im willing to give Boesch a pass on this 2nd half because of his thumb and because he seems to have changed his plate approach to be more consistent. also, while hes still below average defensively, he improved a lot since last year (i no longer get really nervous when balls are hit to him). if he does the same thing next year though w/o injury we should cut ties.
young, on the other hand, has no upside in my eyes. the guy is allergic to walks resulting in an empty batting average, hits into way too many double plays, and doesnt hit for nearly enough power to make up for all his other shortcomings. being a "contact hitter" with no speed makes him a liability, not an asset. he is also probably the worst defensive outfielder in the game not named adam dunn. honestly, id say we could upgrade TWO corner outfield spots this offseason, but if we can get rid of young for someone the opposite of him (such as dejesus, who gets on base and plays great defense) i could live with boesch in the OF for now.
