Gitmo

I have not read any reports of militants surrounding an embassy in the US and holding the staff hostage.

I'm sure you knew I meant the Iranian government, or Komiteh, which accused all the American embassy hostages as CIA spies.

Your attempt at subterfuge devalues your argument.

Hasn't it been pretty well established that paying locals to turn people in resulted in tons of innocent people being sent to Gitmo? We've already released most of the people we locked up. There's no question of whether or not we have a mix of innocent and guilty people, just the question of whether or not we follow our laws or any laws as we try to separate them.

yes.

I don't know if we've released most of the people. a fair number. and more are scheduled to be released, but Obama signed an executive order halting the releases, and he's backed on this by most of the conservative GOP and democratic members of congress.

again, it shouldn't be that difficult. If you have the evidence, try them. if you don't, release them.

Maybe someday Mitch will be arrested, detained, and charged with a crime he's innocent of. Or even held indefinitely by police because they just don't like him, or his neighbor informed on him. Then he can think back to this thread, and say "OH... so that's why they wrote the 5th and 6th amendments to the Constitution, and where the principle of habeus corpus came from. NOW I get it! Hey, I want a lawyer. I want a fair trial."

or maybe the police will neglect to read him his Miranda rights, and after 12 hours of questioning he'll crack after being driven delirious, and confess to a crime he did not commit, something that happens with alarming regularity. Or confess after being subjected to police abuse and coercion. Then he'll think back and say, "OH... NOW I see why Miranda warnings were mandated. Now I see where the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th Amendments come from. I get it now! Hey, I need a lawyer."

We've released about 600 of the 800-ish.

Wikipedia says there are 166 people in Gitmo now and 50-60 have been cleared for release, but we're having trouble finding a place for them.

based on some commentaries, that latter point is claimed by the US government, but not supported by some or all of the foreign governments (notably Yemen) who have stated they want their citizens returned.

And wanting Gitmo closed doesn't make me a liberal. What the hell does "politically conservative" mean? It just means you want to maintain traditional rules, philosophies, or values. People pick and choose which values they're talking about and there can be plenty of grey area, but on the issue of individual rights of citizens or non-citizens it's pretty clear. The US traditionally sets a high standard on the rights of individuals and follows laws designed to prevent arbitrary processes being used unevenly to various classes of people. The conservative position should be to respect the rule of law.

You obviously know nothing of my political premises. I am not surprised. And you also need to buy a new presumption meter because you just burned up the one you are using now.

Is this the same thing as what they're calling that new gizmo the presumeter?

That thing that costs only three easy payments of $39.99? I saw that on TV! Never scold your kids again until you have all the facts!

If they are innocent why would they need a place for them?

Depends. Maybe the claim is a lie (MC already said that some detainees have a place to go) or maybe they literally have no place to go. We can't just release them into Cuba.

Apparently, some are innocent of what we accused them of, but they want to fight the Chinese government and we picked them up while they were training for that. China would like us to hand them over.
