Hoops vs Gonzaga

Can you go from unranked to number 1 that quick?

I guess hypothetically it could but it won?t happen here in this case. Michigan is not going to jump over every undefeated team ahead of them to be ranked #1.

Louisville is beating Western Kentucky pretty handily right now and assuming that holds, Louisville would be expected to be #1 when Michigan-who will of course be ranked after Monday?s poll-goes on the road to play them.

Figure Michigan will be ranked above every ranked team this week that has a loss, and probably not ahead of any undefeated team this week.

Or pretty much anyway.

I don't care if Michigan is ranked. Michigan is doing just fine unranked. This team has shown what the ranking is worth. I hope they don't rank the team. Fuck em!

It doesn?t matter at all at this point. Later in the season rankings can mean something as far tournament seedings go, but it?s way too early to worry about that.

But rankings are fun for some fans to pay attention to. If they weren?t, sports media probably wouldn?t bother with them.

That said, one would expect that Michigan will probably be ranked in this Monday?s rankings.

I want us to be ranked whatever will make MSU & OSU fans angriest.

I assume that's anywhere ahead of both of them right now.

Beyond that, I'm curious to see how we cut it in the Big Ten. Shit gets real then.

Man! That watch was difficult again. The team played great. Don't get me wrong, but Dickie V was absolutely horrible again. There was a basketball game going on, but all he did was plug his cancer research fund. Yeah, I get it. It's a wonderful cause, but he is supposed to be calling a basketball game. This was just a 2 hour campaign for our money.

Now we get him again on tuesday night. I might just have to watch that one on mute.

Great game by the Michigan team!! Too bad the announcers were looking for ways to take away from it every second that they weren't trying to beg me for money.

AND. really!! Do we really need to watch fat guy in the fab 5 tank top dance and flap his arms after every single commercial break? I mean, there were a few better choices in the crowd than that...

I know I can imagine how bad Dickie V. Will be blowing Louisville on Tuesday. These board sat were so bad. He was a tad better against Gonzaga but not much.

My guess on the ranking is the players are using it for motivation that is for sure. Also how the hell if you are a writer or coach are you that dumb? Michigan ah have a new coach but it’s not like the Cupboard was bare. Heck we still had Livers Jr, and Teske and Simpson who are both seniors. Brooks had play many games last season. I am amazed at how hard both brooks, Castleton, and David D worked last off season. All three are so much better then last season. We should been ranked somewhere between 15-25 to start the season.

Yeah, with the nucleus we had coming back, there should have been no overlooking us a top 25 team. That's just ignorant. It working out, though.

Here's this little tidbit at the end of today's ESPN article......

If Michigan lands a spot in the AP's top 10, the Wolverines would be the sixth team since the AP poll expanded to 25 teams in 1989-90 to go from unranked one week to the top 10 the next. The previous instance was 2010-11 UConn, which jumped to No. 7 after winning the Maui Invitational. That team went on to win the national championship.

Michigan might join 1989-90 Kansas as the only team to jump from unranked to the top five since the poll expanded.

Wow Very cool.

Being unranked after being a top 10 team with 3 of the top 6 guys coming back (which is pretty good in today's college BB world) was a bit undeserved. Somewhere near the end of the top 25 might have been more appropriate.

But it's not completely out of line because Howard was just such an unproven commodity coming into the season. Glowing reviews from NBA folks but zero head coaching experience and no college experience. And replacing one of the best coaches in the college game. I don't think one could blame anyone for being skeptical. But he's obviously showing that he's got what it takes so far. So good for him. If Beilein was coming back UM would have probably been ranked top 15 at minimum, possibly top 10 to start.

UM probably moves into the Top 10 this week. I've learned though that there isn't much more meaningless than November or early December college b-ball rankings, which is why I'm not sweating our VT loss. Especially this year where it appears that almost nobody is really any good.

Its not that nobody is good, its that some teams have guys playing together for the first time. It takes time for the chemistry to build. Lots of one and doners have come in. Having 3 really good players back should have earned this team a little respect. And no, November means nothing, but it does help for seeding purposes. It helps if Michigan ends up going through a little adversity later in the year. The wins will mean something.

I agree. I have no problem with them starting the season unranked. I liked it. No expectations is great. Teske, Livers, and Simpson would continue to be good, but who could guess on Brooks and DD? Some of us were hoping for Brooks to transfer at the end of last season. DD hadn't shown anything. They could have very easily continued to be nonfactors, but they stepped up. Now that several players have had a chance to show that they improved instead of the opposite, Michigan will get ranked.

I hope that the players don't change their mindset at all. I got the feeling from all of the interviews that it didn't bother them one bit.

The wins will definitely mean something. Big wins mean a lot in November and December. I don't know if a couple losses here and there would matter much, though.

That win vaulted us all the way to #3 (behind KU and Duke) in Sagarin's ratings metric (link). I checked and we were #22 after beating ISU, #11 after beating UNC.

Teams having guys playing together for the first time isn't a new thing, but this year the freshman class seems unusually weak (and you've got some of the truly talented guys like Anthony Edwards who went to a place like Georgia instead of a bunch top guys gathering at Duke or Kentucky). A lot of those Duke-Kentucky teams had crappy chemistry but were able to get by on talent. Or maybe a better way to put it is the players are talented but unpolished. Teams won't be able to do that this year, which means things look to be pretty wide open.

And again I think Michigan being unranked was as much to do with the questions about Howard and losing Beilein rather than compared who they returned vs other teams. That and maybe the lack of depth last year and not knowing what they might get from of those guys moving up into the rotation this year. And I agree November matters for seeding later on if anything. Those wins are big for the Big Ten overall which is looking kind of weak right now. Looks like UM, MSU, MD, and OSU will be good and PSU has the look of a bit of a sleeper. After that a bunch of question marks and bad losses so far.
