Michigan and Penn State will tangle in the late-night game on Wednesday at the Big Ten Tournament (Peacock, around 9 p.m.). It’s no secret that playing on Wednesday means the season hasn’t been successful, but tonight’s game appears to be a matchup of one team still battling and one that has mailed it in.

Penn State has lost plenty of games this year and may still finish under .500, but the Nittany Lions have stuck to the script. They still play hard and scrapped their way to nine conference wins, two more than they earned in non-conference play. Over the last five games, Penn State has been playing like a top-50 team, according to Bart Torvik.

Michigan’s season has gone from mediocre to bad to much worse. The Wolverines weren’t a good team when Olivier Nkamhoua was sidelined for the year — their loss to MSU pushed the record to 8-19 — but they haven’t been competitive since. In the five games since Nkamhoua last played, Michigan is 0-5, has been outscored by 18 points per game, and is playing like Torvik’s 220th-best team in the country. Only Louisville and DePaul have been worse.

It’s hard to look at tonight’s matchup as anything other than a matchup between a team that wants to keep playing and a team ready to turn the page.

Go Blue! (for what is most likely the final time this season)

Michigan ties it 20-20 late in the half and with Dug uninterested his turnovers help fuel a Psu 10-0 run late here in the half. He is not the only player playing bad.
They look so lost most of the time.

Turnover after turnover after turnover from Michigan as a Williams layup Miss leads to a Psu three. Psu ends the half on a 13-2 run after it was tied 20-20.

Look on the bright side guys, next year won't be any better! Mid-major program until donors and the athletic department wake up to the current landscape of college basketball.

Does Howard teach any defense ? I’m curious. Some of those inbounds plays guys are wide open for easy layups. They just do not close out in anyone it seems.

They got hot out of half and cut lead to four but Psu has extended lead back to 12.

Yet another unforced turnover. Too many tonight

Reed Jr and Will each have 4 fouls.

Howard’s kid is so bad. Story of his Michigan career. He just can’t make a bucket no matter how close he is to the hoop.
I don’t care if NIL is an issue. This team is really bad. They are poorly coached. Howard does not deserve another season as the coach of Michigan basketball.
