The reason some fans were down on this team, even after a good year, is because of the history of this organization.
The details might be slightly different but the general results never seem to change, it's like the Lions are stuck on loop. Weren't we discussing O-line problems last decade? Why does this issue always pop up every couple of years? Hell, you could probably take any argument about this team from a decade ago, replace the names, and those arguments would still be valid for this current team.
The Lions have yet to give the fans good reason to believe in a turnaround, it's always one step forward and two (three, four,...twelve) steps back. I understand team success usually comes in cycles in this league, but it's like the Lions are stuck in a deep valley with small hills here and there, few and far between. It always comes back to shitty seasons and high draft picks. It always comes back to blowing this team up and rebuilding. It's understandable why fans are so negative, because they're usually proven right in a short amount of time.
Here's the history to back it up...
In the Super Bowl era (1966-present, 50 seasons)
- 14 winning seasons
- 11 playoff appearances
- 2 stretches of consecutive playoff appearances (1982-1983, 1993-1995)
- 1 playoff win (1991)
- Of those 11 playoff appearances, 6 were followed up by losing seasons (1984, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2012, 2015)
- A combined putrid regular season record of 309-441-10 (.413) over that time, 1-14 in the playoffs
Players change, coaches change, management changes, but the results never seem to change, at least not for the better. Success is rare and almost always short-lived. At this point, I'm not even sure if a decade of reasonable success could change fan mentality, we've been screwed over too many times.
