Jamey Carroll

I like the idea that we've got a small thread for most of the major guys we'll likely look at/want, and with the latest news about Carroll i figured it was time to start a thread about him as well.


Apparently, if we enquired about Carroll he would be very enthusiastic:

"Jonathan Maurer, the agent for free agent second baseman Jamey Carroll, told Lynn Henning of the Detroit News that the Tigers would be viewed "enthusiastically" should they approach Carroll about a deal."

I would be very in favor of getting Carroll for a year or two, he represents basically everything we need from a second baseman right now: good OPB, good skill on the basepaths, healthy, and good defense for cheap. because of his skillset and style of play, im not too worried about his age (38 by the time the season starts).

I think a 38 year only works if we have someone waiting in the wings to take over 2B. But the Tigers don't. I would rather get a more permanent guy. But that's me.

I feel the same way. Give me a guy for 2-3 years unless we have a target for a starting 2nd base in 2013.

Why?

Carroll is obviously a stopgap, but he has had success recently. He brings a nice OBP, which has been lacking. Santiago has a nice glove, but is a very poor hitter. His likely .300 OBP is a killer.

I would prefer a long term solution at second, also, but if there isn't one available, you've got to make due with what you can.

Or we could use him as a stopgap until we can get someone better at 2B through free agency or a trade. Whether or not we have someone in the minors waiting to take over or we're waiting to find a permanent solution through other means, its not going to happen this year because of the very weak 2B market, so we might as well get a stopgap like Carroll.

And Id like to not use Santiago over Carroll, Carroll's career numbers are much better, especially his OBP. Carroll would likely be cheaper too. I honestly dont think we'll end up resigning Santiago anyways. He wants a full time job somewhere and we're not willing to give him one.

I don't know. Can I not "not" have a suggestion? I just know that Inge is back at 3rd and I would rather have a better upgrade. That's all.

I guess I just dont see the point of saying "well I want someone better but I have no idea who that is". At any rate I think its likely we get a good 3rd baseman somewhere because the trade market for them is much better (id love Chase Headley), so getting Carroll to provide good OBP and defense would be perfect.

Honestly I don't have a great answer for thaty. I just kind of hate 38 year old 1 year solutions who arent really a big asset. It's more of an irritant than a logical answer I guess. I just feel like Carroll give you an average year or worse most likely and then next year your probably looking for someone else as Carroll cant have many if any productive years left. I think I'd rather just give Santiago a full year and see what happens than pick him up.

If Carroll was 32, I probably don't have an issue. Although in that scenario he may get a 3-4 year deal and stick around giving us mediocrity for an even longer period at 2b so who knows. I (like everyone else) just wish there was a guy out there who could hit .280ish and walk...but they seem to be scarce at the moment.

Jamey Carroll IS that guy.

career .278 BA and .356 OBP (versus santiago's .249/.316). He rarely strikes out as well, plays good defense, and while not a burner isnt a liability on the basepaths. I have a hard time seeing why he isnt a perfect fit for this team right now.

I agree with Spock. You are going to have a second base problem next year, regardless. There just doesn't seem to be a more long term solution out there.

I like Santiago as a back up. He's shown in his career that he is not a full time player. He excels when the manager can pick favorable spots for him to start games.
