Jaylon Smith expected to miss rookie campaign

He's too good not to be patient. All projections are that the nerve will heal and he will be 100%. If he's there, use one of our 5th rounders and grab him.

I'm not sure about the 100% health thing. The article linked in this thread says:
"I know there are some teams very concerned about whether he'll be ready to go in 2017. Unfortunately, I think that's really going to hurt his stock,"
Maybe it will heal eventually, but people being worried about it not being ready 18 months from now doesn't make you feel all that comfortable.

That said with the talent it could be worth the risk. I could see throwing a 5th or 6th rounder at him. It's not like you expect the player to play year 1 when drafted that late anyways.

Even if he tries to go La'el Colins and threatens to sit out still draft him, things change when they see that couple million dollar contract in front of him. Collins wasn't going to sign as an undrafted free agent, that changed quickly.

5th rd picks since 2011

2011 Doug Hogue
2012 Tahir Whitehead, Chris Greenwood
2013 Sam Martin
2014 Caraun Reid
2015 Michael Burton

How many of these guys made an immediate impact? With 2 picks in the 5th rd, I say it's worth a flyer on a 1st rd talent in the 5th.

But we don't know if he'll make an impact at all. I still remember big Mike Williams. Highly touted, missed a year due to getting an agent, and was lousy.

I think that matters more.. Can't be easy to miss that much time, still be a rookie a year later - and perform. So you're really looking at 2018. Maybe.

Most 5th rounders dont, anyway. There is essentially nothing lost if this guy doesn't work out.

It's easy to say that except some 5th rounders to work out. Even for Detroit. I'm just not sure after missing a year, and the time from his injury (so really 18 months or more) is smart. Maybe if we had a consistent winning org. like NE. As much is there is a risk of them being worthless, it's better than the ones who are injured and miss a year. Plus they could always trade that fifth.. You can get some solid players for a 5th round pick. Or use to trade up for a 4th.

Except in this case we could get a potential superstar for the price of a 5th round pick. This would be a pick that has every other team saying they wish they wouldve taken a chance on him. Nobody would look down on taking him in the 5th. He's not going to be there in the 5th so this conversation is probably worthless. But if we did, the worst case scenario it will give everybody something to bitch about. Could've had a solid practice squad player, could've had a player that didn't make the roster, and is no longer in the league, etc..

IMO, he'll be a bust. Missing 18 months after an injury like that means bust. Now a 7th round pick, I'll get on board.

No such thing as a fifth round bust, imo

Normally but if this guy lasts until the 5th, expectations will be high.

I disagree, the 5th round is for players who need a couple years to develop to MAYBE become starter quality. This guy is not of that mold, he just needs time to get healthy, the talent is undoubtedly there. 5th round is a crap shoot, no givens, just a guess that a player MIGHT have starter potential one day, key word, MIGHT.

44 days. Until he returns. Anyone want to take a bet to when he's gone again?

"The talent people and the GMs are looking for certainty about recovery. And it's premature to have certainty. We don't know three months into it. I think there will be some certainty six or eight months into it, but just not now. You're playing the odds right now."

Teams won't know until July-September whether they just made the steal of the decade or just passed on a pick and burned cash.

Burn cash. ...that's what we do best.

Burn cash. ...that's what we do best.

Think about that for a moment bud... these guys are paid MILLIONS of dollars to play a game we played as kids.

I would say the thing the NFL is absolutely best at, universally, is burning cash. And we as fans buy their jerseys, tickets, watch advertisements during games... we help them do it.

Not complaining. This is America. Get what you can get and get all of it. But let's not pretend the salary of any NFL player is really justified... or any pro sport for that matter.

Hoping you'll start another "who DON'T you want the Lions to draft" thread. I believe it was you that started that the last couple years. I could probably look it up but I'm lazy.

that is a pretty fun thread. gives so much ammo to use for years and years lmao. ragland would be my pick this year for that thread.
