Jim Schwartz: Staffords mechanics are outstanding!!

i agree with what you r sayin mitch, but i think a difference has been when staff has been off he seems to be off by a larger margin this year and that is likely due to a slight difference in mechanics. with the exception of the wr not running correct route naturally. can't really blame staff for that GB pick even though it ends up on his stats. still there have been several times the ball just kinda sails on him sometimes or he throws well behind the wr where last year it seemed the balls were more on target and wrs were just dropping them. that to me has something to do with mechanics and should be able to be fixed. could also be a minor injury or something that has tweaked his motion and we are just not aware of it.

If I had to guess I'd say minor injury he's playing through. But in any event, he probably wouldn't be one of the first I'd blame.

Missing wide open receivers by ten yards isnt a problem? Its not like hes leading his receiver too much, theyre 10 feet over the receivers head, or behind them. If the Lions were stacked at the receiver position I think you would be singing a different tune. Im not saying to bench the kid or that hes anything close to a mediocre QB, but that these issues are probably what held him out of being mentioned in the top tier of QBs this year

Not saying he doesn't have issues because he does. All i'm saying is that he isn't the ONLY problem. I should have clarified myself. He's the least of our worries.

The kid is still putting up huge numbers even though it sometimes does appear he has gotten a little to cautious and may be trying to avoid a lot of the hits. His willingness to stare down the rush and fire a well aimed rocket has really hurt him this year. He is constantly throwing while turning away and his pocket presence more than anything has been atrocious. All though I would really attribute a lot of this to him losing his reliable dump off option. Best was the secret weapon in this offense. If it wasnt there he could find him on a quick dump off and Best would be able to gain some yards. Now the windows are much smaller for the TE's because the LBs can sit back and wait on them. But the TE numbers have still been quite good despite drops and timing being off.

To clarify my last post im not saying I want him taking those hits that would be an even worse situation just saying that last year he seemed to hang in a beat longer especially early in the season when he did have some shorter routes open.

I agree that he is the least of the Lions worries. I dont think Detroit as a franchise can afford not to address the teams actual needs this offseason. Man, there is nothing to do but vent when talking about the Lions this year, cannot believe how underwhelmed I am by them after the effort they put up last year. Of course I didnt expect a perfect season or anything of that nature, but I definitely expected them to close the show if they had a sizable lead at the half. It was definitely harder to watch than an absolute ass whooping.

I think my frustration with these comments that Swartz & Stafford made about not having a problem with his mechanics is the arrogance of not even considering working on them. Of the starting QBs the top 10 in completion % are all over 64% (Stafford is 20th). Yards per completion the top 10 are all over 7.5 yards (Stafford is 21st at less than 7). I think he needs to be at that 65% completeion percentage to get at or near that elite level.

Lions lead the league in drops this year. That hurts the %. And 60% is tougher when you throw it way more than other teams plus the drops. He's got areas to work on like pocket presence and I'm sure they will still work on mechanics with him. Just saying no drastic changes are needed for his mechanics

And it also hurts when Titus blows up because he was a good deep threat from time to time. His YPA are down big, a big reason the TD's are down, though I suspect Linehan plays a role in that as well. And the rushing TDs are up as well.

Titus regression and Pettigrew regression at key times when needed really has hurt the offense to some degree but not totally 24 PPG is solid. The lack of Best for 5 games at least hurt some too. Broyles was looking good to replace Burleson at least but then of course he got injured.

The Lions scored 27 true PPG last year. Overall they were 29.6 PPG but that was due to the defensive touchdowns they got. Defensive TDs is another thing the Lions are lacking. They are on the very wrong side of the spectrum allowing 8(most in NFL) and have scored 0 this year. No help for the offense at all.

Going foward Calvin is still a beast, we will get Broyles back(hopefully by Week 1) and Pettigrew needs to flat out play better at key times. We'll see with his injury but he was on pace for 700 yards again. That's a solid job and he can be prodcutive going forward but the fumbles and drops will always stick out with him especially if it cost the Lions game(which it did in about 3 games among other things).

Sadly we need a deep threat WR still but it's better we know now Titus is a nut job before FA and the draft. It's like with Best last year, the Lions didn't know the concussion wouldn't be healed by the start of the season and just had to wait and hope. This year they are more informed after getting screwed with Best and Titus.

Could this be the problem? 2nd to last paragraph. Im thinking that despite Shwartz' comment, this will be addressed in the offseason. In my eyes this is borderline neglect. Hire some guy off of the street to be your franchise qb's coach, that is amazing to me. When you draft a qb of the future, why not spend the money to get him an elite, mentor type coach???

Typical Lions. They invest in a $50M QB and don't hire a $250K coach to develop him. That is like buying a $500K bentley and taking it to Jiffy Lube for an oil change.

They hired a coach but apparently he isn't the GOAT so people are complaining.

Nah, just someone with a "lengthy track record" as the article says.

Speaking of inexperienced. Kris Koureck the Dline coach. His first year was 2010. Maybe we could upgrade there. Washburn was fired from Philly. Bring him in to be Dline coach
