Former Titans and Eagles defensive line coach Jim Washburn has been hired by the Lions: http://www.detroitlions.com/news/li...-in-2013/18f978d6-e96d-4336-b81b-254e1ef36052

He did a great job in Tennessee for a long time and brings great knowledge of the wide nine, a lot more than Gunther knows.

"He's more scheme than a motivator. He understands what our defense is. He understands what helps this defense. I think him and Coach Cunningham will definitely be on the same page and help each other when it comes to this defense ? it's a unique kind of defense. It's not your ordinary 4-3 defense, it's a Wide 9, and you have to have the right personnel. I think Jim Washburn will get the right guys, the right personnel, to fit this defensive line and get us to where we need to get to as a team. Bringing him in only helps us." -Tulloch

I really do like this hire. Lets face it we need all the help we can get.

could washburn step in and be the d coord if Gunther dies?

If Gunther dies would anyone notice outside of the guy who makes a living off his quotes comparing everyone to Derrick Thomas? I mean every play is the same it's called cover zero.

Which we don't and probably never will. Bring in all the coordinators you want, we've still got garbage in most positions and very little if any depth.

This is awesome. Hopefully we can now draft a DL that produces in reality what they should in theory.

We have other holes? Meh, only thing that matters is having the right personnel to run the Wide 9.

Why dont we have them already after running it for so many years? Next question!

Why don't we use a system that takes advantage of the skillset of current team instead of pounding a square peg into a round hole? Listen, there is only one system to run, all others are for shit, get that through your head. We will bring in an entire new group of players if that is what it takes to make the Wide 9 prove itself. If that group fails, we will do the same thing next year and keep doing so until it finally works, got it?

Any chance we will see more blitzes or stunts next year? Again, with the right players, the Wide 9 works and their should be no need for blitzes or stunts.

Do or die Mayhew&Co, that's all I can say at this point...do or die.

It work 2 years ago, for the most part. just not last season. I hate the wide 9 but when we have injuries, we're screwed as the Detroit Lions have zero depth.

How many years does it take to have depth? If depth is so vital, then time to trade some individual talent to go and get depth. We don't have the talent either? Again, after how many years??? So no depth, no individual talent to trade for depth...please tell me therebis an excuse for that as it seems completely indefencible to me.

We need late round picks to pan out. That's how you get depth.

So we need late round picks to pan out. What does that say about the ability to properly analyze talent? And why have we regularly used late round picks to trade up?

And why can't they do proper analysis of current roster and trade guys to teams that are a better fit elsewhere in return for guys who are better fits on the Lions and or draft picks to better develop depth?

Going into year 5 and still in rebuilding mode is not acceptable. At thisbpoint they should be making minor adjustments to be super bowl contenders, not drastic overhauls like they currently need to do.

The simple answer, no idea. The long answer, no idea. The longest answer, many teams can't draft shit in the late rounds. I'm not sure how we got to "too many players can't fit here". Its a 4-3, the wide 9 is just an added gimmick. If we have guys that don't fit its because we have guys who can't play anymore, KVB and 1 trick ponies, Avril and guys who can't play at all..

Welcome to the NFL. More teams fit the Lions mode over that of NE. And if you want to play the blame game, I'd go with the scouts over Mayhew.

Mayhew has the Rank, he therefore has the Responsibility. He gets the credit, he gets the blame. He's in charge of the scouts, their failures and successes are his also.

Very few teams fit the Lions mode. Heck even the Browns have won more playoff games than the Lions. Does any team have fewer playoff wins than the lions in the super bowl era? Even expansion teams added in last 15 years have more. That's pretty sad and not the average in the NFL.
