Just feel awful for Appling

Well after the Nebraska loss Izzo suggested not playing Appling the rest of the regular season. The next day Keith came out and said “I have five Big Ten games left in my final go-round as a Spartan and I plan on playing in all five of them.”

Do the math

Also, the only thread that I saw you mention anything about sitting Appling was the day after the Michigan game in the Can we salvage the season thread. 2 posters commented on it....hardly everybody. By the way, Johnny and myself mentioned sitting him the day before in the game thread for what it's worth.

Well, after the Nebraska game Izzo was still missing Dawson and was still very much in the hunt for a B1G Championship and even a number 1 or 2 seed - something he probably figured Trice and Ellis weren't going to get him. You keeping up with the math here? And to the best of my knowledge, he was still the coach and Appling was still a player. If you think Izzo kept playing Appling because of something Appling said in a press conference, then Izzo isn't a very good coach.

Izzo said that the only way appling is going to get better is by playing. One off the assistants said off the record that appling doesn't have the pain anymore but doesn't have the range of motion either so his shot is different every time.

Tough call here but I guess ill just trust izzo for the time being

Well it's clear that Appling ISN'T helping the team by playing. He's, in fact, hurting the team being out there.

We both agree on the sitting Appling in hopes of him getting closer to right. Let's just leave it at that.

That said, we really don't know what truth is about his wrist. As sbee just posted, maybe it really is just a range of motion and strength thing that only getting reps will help and he'll get better each time he plays.

Bottom line, who the **** knows?

I think the most damaging thing is that Izzo is putting Appling ahead of the team success. He shouldn't be playing right now.
100% agree. Trice was playing fantastic with the additional minutes and really starting to lead the team. Why wait with Payne and Dawson to be closer to full strength, but rush Appling back? being loyal (to a fault) with a senior will be this seasons demise.

without the threat of being a scorer, Appling is virtually useless on the offense and allows the defense to collapse. Izzo is making it harder for this team to score by putting a ~60% Appling in the game. he's flat out outcoaching himself. it's a shame really, for such a talented team to be wasted by game mismanagement.

Appling looks like Mark Montgomery of freshman year neitzel out there now

This team would be lucky to have Montgomery in his senior year right now - at least he could dribble to his left and right...

here are some good rexrode tweets from today no the subject

Izzo on Appling, reiterates he'll keep playing. "I do appreciate some of your assistant-coaching thoughts but..." (looks at @Graham_Couch )

However, Izzo says he is considering reducing Appling's minutes if things don't change.

Seemed like a therapeutic hour for Izzo. "I want you to leave here knowing this guy thinks we can ... and we will. Not trying to sell it."

Ventine is the best point on this team. I say go with the lineup of Valentine, Harris, Dawson, Payne and, Costello. Try to fasten the pace of the game because this team is awful in the half court. And with that lineup you are easily the tallest team in the country. But what the hell do I know?

Valentine is a good passer from the 3 or 4 spot if we go small but can he run the entire offense? he did when Trice needed a breather and Appling out but giving him the keys to the offense isn't smart in March.

Hell, there is no good solution to this one, I guess I'll just trust the best coach in the country

I wouldn't trust Valentine to run the offense right now other than for short stints. He's still prone to bad decisions and trying to make the impossible play.
