Maybe he dosesn't care about those criticisms, and as mentioned earlier, this speculation now (which is very regional and will die out shortly) is much preferrable to the rampant speculation regarding a potential coaching change that likely would have occurred.

or worse... like other teams moving to lock in potential OC candidates you might look at, Borges undermining his own team out of spite, other teams trying to poach recruits, etc.

I don't blame a guy for not being completely 100% transparent, when it's his job to keep his opponents guessing. since avoiding the press altogether isn't an option, he's forced to respond. I don't care if he "lies" (even though I don't think what he said was a lie) as long as he's not doing anything to embarrass the University or the Program (see e.g. RichRod, John L. Smith, or any of the coaching press conference meltdowns from the Coors Light ads).

What difference does it make? He said what he said in early December and there were still endless questions, blog posts, speculation, etc. To me, the most likely scenario was Hoke knew Borges was gone but lied for obvious reasons. Maybe the AD forced his hand or maybe Hoke isn't as dumb as he looks and is using this as cover for firing his friend or maybe he just fired his friend for cause and is keeping the details private out of respect for his friend and/or contempt for idiots in the press. If Hoke is on the hot seat, there's no way this move cools things down - only winning will do that so all these conspiracy theories are a waste of time.
