Beyond ridiculous that these helmets fly off like they do, with all the technology we have there isn't a way to secure these helmets better? Laveon Bells concussion should not have happened, and now he's got a label as a guy that has had at least 1 major concussion.

When I played you needed a can opener to get a helmet on and off. Don't know how they have changed the design to make them so easy to remove.

The helmet design is flawed. There needs to be an extra exterior layer of some kind of material that absorbs the impact as well. Picture the current helmet with another exterior layer that "gives" upon impact. Use the current soft interior, hard shell then an additonal soft exterior. It might look kind of stupid (like Don Beebe) but I think it would help.

I agree Tom almost like Nascar has for the softer barriers. Some of the problem is the players play with loose helmets and the players with all the dreads cant get a helmet to fit properly with all the hair underneath it. In Bell's case though he got popped twice. The first hit loosened the helmet and the 2nd hit knocked it off.

Some players wore this design in the 60s and 70s.

The revolution helmets are actually supposed to pop off in a major collision by design. Someone can look this up if they care to do so. It actually lessens the impact. The hit with the helmet on did him in not after it came off.

Hope he is ok.. Pittsburgh had guys dropping like fly's yesterday..

You can't have a soft outside of a helmet, that would cause neck injuries with the helmet gripping during a collision rather than sliding.

Something needs to change though, the helmets don't offer adequate protection.

That's what I thought, similar to a crumple zone on a car, the energy of the impact stays with the helmet which ejects. I have no proof or data but that's what it looks like, if it stays on the energy is transferred to the head inside.

As a (former) rugby player, I believe that going back to more primitive helmets would solve the problem. Of course it will a) never happen and b) if it did, would be hard to phase in, but you learn how to tackle safely and properly when you've got nothin' on your noggin.

Definitely an apt comparison. I've played in those helmets and they are supposed to be much safer than the old Riddell's that some still use.

Yup, start making it illegal to use your head...same with running backs. You start teaching people at younger levels that you have to tackle with your arms and body and not use your head like a heat seeking missile. If you only tackle someone by solely launching your head at them then it's a 15 yard penalty (maybe even an automatic ejection).

Not that I want to see that at all, but if they are serious about protecting players and their brains then they have to create rules that outlaw guys from using their heads as a battering ram.

Here is what I think: football is violent and concussions will happen. The NFL took the wrong tact in trying to make the game concussion free instead of admitting concussions happened, will happen, and will happen in the future not matter the rules or fines.

When I was a kid I was always taught to tackle a guy at the legs..take them out and he ain't going anywhere. No one knows how to tackle that way anymore..

If you're a CB why hit a RB up high, most likely they're just going to run over you. And other stupid thing that always happens now, trying to strip the ball. Which rarely works..I've seen play after play a RB or WR or TE get extra yards because the defensive tries to strip rather than make a freakin' tackle.

DB drills every day consisted of a guy jogging up the sideline....you take the angle and put your helmet right on his earhole. If you don't want concussions go learn underwater basket weaving.

Schlereth talks all the time how the NFL is one big hypocricy and how they aren't using the correct helmet if they are truly looking to make the sport safer.

Impossible. Its human nature to lead with your head. I'm all for safety but this is a touchy subject. You start ejecting guys, this sport is done.

Tell Nick Fairley that when he got 15 yards for going low on Glennon last week. Total bullshit.

As for CB's going high. You rarely see it, they're always going low because they are the smaller guy on the field usually, right? Go high and you get trucked.

And these guys work on stripping the ball all the time. Its part of their drills.
