Lions Exploring a trade up

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/9388/sammy-watkins

The Lions are actively looking for a partner to trade up and grab Watkins. I think its a good idea and have been pushing for it all along. Thoughts?

yes please. My current trade mock is:

1 WR Watkins (trade)
3 S Ahmad Dixon
4 CB Claiborne (trade)
4 DE William Clarke

btw id equally be ok with a trade down for Matthews and gain a pick or 2.

As I've said for the last week or two, I'm all for giving up a 2nd for Watkins. I think he'd be worth it. Especially with the salary cap going up to at least $133 million, which gives us a little more money to fill needs in free agency.

Problem with that is EVERY team has more flexibility.....driving up prices. Even solid players like Pettigrew will get better offers than they normally would. Also, with more cap room, fewer solid players will be cut.

Might be a tough free agency period.

Love that mock. Dream scenario for me.

I do agree that every team has more flexibility, but I still think Watkins would be worth trading a 2nd rounder to move up.

If the lions trade up it should be for Clowney or Mack. In my opinion it would be ridiculous to invest your top two draft picks on one WR

Clowney will go #1 book it. Watkins is the WR equivalent to Clowney. I would have no problem investing my first two picks in an AJ Green or a Julio Jones and Atlanta gave up way more for Julio. That is Watkins ceiling. Add that to the fact that you may significantly prolong CJs career (and possibly Staffords) who you just threw money at like Pacman Jones at the Spearmint Rhino. That is worth it.

Mack to me, I don't see the same thing that others see in him. He's a great prospect with high bust potential. Watkins has a much higher floor, with his floor being a significant #2, ceiling like I said #1A.

You are paying Stafford and Calvin together around 40 million dollars per year. I am tired of seeing the lions waste high picks on the offensive side of the ball because those two need more help.

Hey man you and me both. You forgot Bush while you are at it. Blame bad luck like LKP or like me and Hughes blame Mayhew. Blame the coaches like the FO did. Probably most accurately blame the players.

But whether its offense or defense its only a waste if they don't make an impact. I think Watkins makes the biggest right away and long term impact on either side. That and I don't trust Mayhew to make the right pick outside of the sure thing.

You rip Mayhew every other thread for taking a #4 WR (Broyles) in the 2nd....but you're ok with using a high 1st AND 2nd for a #2?

Hmmmmmm?

1) broyles is a slot. technically hes an injured gimp. But at BEST hes a slot
2) Stafford has now proven he cant get it done without more weapons, more coaches, more qb gurus, more qb coaches, more more more more more. So if we give him all these things and he still sucks ass we can finally be done with all the excuses and we will need to move on from his high salary with little reward.
3) Calvin has yet to have a true #2 opposite him since hes been here. The list of WRs mayhew has brought in is absolutely priceless lmao:
durham
mike Thomas
d will
nate
titus
broyles
....go get the cant miss so I don't have to watch how brutal mayhew is anymore at trying his patchwork crap then realizing later how wrong he was (see making up for the best injury and wendling starting multiple games). #2 WR has quickly rose to be our top priority. The need wasn't there at the time of the broyles pick.

Why doesn't that make sense? How often does a #4 WR see the field (plus he was coming off the ACL injury)? Very little. How often does a #2 WR see the field? Every play unless he's gassed because Watkins can line up anywhere on the field (outside, in the slot, in the backfield).

Plus, Watkins would be a #1 WR on almost any team, not a #2. Getting Watkins would prolong Calvin's career, give us a great first year impact as well as the future, and give the Lions a guy to take over for Calvin when he retires.

This trade would be so lions though. What other franchise that is comming off of 11 wins combined in two years, packages 2 top 45 picks to draft a #2 WR.

Not okay with trading up for a WR. Need or not, good player or not it's still a WR.

I think it would be stupid. The Lions could trade down and get a good #2 WR. The biggest weakness on the Lions is lack of quality depth. Trade down and get an extra 3rd round pick. Build a TEAM. The Lions have a few "stars" but don't have a complete team. Until that happens they won't be a contender.

Or even stay put and not lose a much needed pick to help build the team, even that is better than trading up.

All we keep hearing is how deep this draft is, especially at WR. Only the Lions would need to trade up to get the top rated guy when others could fit the bill and allow for keeping picks at worst, trade down and get more picks at best.

Sure feels like they are going to screw this up once again. One piece is not sufficient and there are plenty of WRs available at 10, or even go CB at 10 and WR in R2. Winning teams would make either scenario work. Time to prove Mayhew is capable of building a winner.
