Lions G.M. Martin Mayhew admits he botched the 2011 draft

In the 2011 draft, many teams chose players who are now the cornerstones of their franchises. And then there are the Lions, who didn?t choose a single player in 2011 who?s still on the team in 2015.

Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew knows he did a lousy job in the 2011 draft.

?I think ?11 wasn?t a good draft for us. I didn?t do a good job in ?11,? Mayhew said, via the Detroit News. ?I think I was overly aggressive. I learned a lot from that, and our drafts have improved since then.?

Mayhew didn?t answer follow-up questions about how he was ?overly aggressive? that year.

?I?m just going to leave it at that,? he said. ?You can interpret it how you want to interpret it.?

That may sound like candor from Mayhew, but if anything he?s understating just how badly he botched the 2011 draft. The Lions? first-round pick, Nick Fairley, is now with the Rams after four up-and-down years with the Lions. The Fairley pick particularly hurts because of the players the Lions could have selected instead. The next three players taken ? Robert Quinn, Mike Pouncey and Ryan Kerrigan ? have all made Pro Bowls.

The Lions? second-round pick, Titus Young, was drafted despite some character red flags and was an unmitigated disaster who is now out of the NFL and facing a lengthy prison sentence for a string of arrests. The Lions traded their third- and fourth-round picks to move up and draft Mikel Leshoure, who is out of the league. The Lions? fifth-round pick, Doug Hogue, is out of the league. The Lions traded their sixth-round pick for Lawrence Jackson, who is now out of the league. The Lions? seventh-round pick, Johnny Culbreath, was hardly ever in the league ? the Lions cut him before he ever played in an NFL game, and no other team picked him up.

With the departure of Ndamukong Suh, the Lions don?t have any players remaining from their 2010 draft class, either. It?s hard to build a winner in the NFL when entire draft classes disappear that quickly, but that?s what happens in Detroit.

Mayhew built a great roster in 2014 and another very good roster for 2015 already. Who cares about 2010 and 2011. This team is stacked.

Xanders is a little database scout bitch. Mayhew is the man that makes the moves. Most good GMS have good scouts and databases though. Great hire by Mayhew.

Proof he didn't learn the 2011 lesson well enough...Give me an E...B...R...O...N...now give me a new GM!!!

Stacked = Super Bowl... This team will not win one

I care about 2010 and 2011. I have been a fan of this team since the 70s. Every year I want this team to do well and most years I have been let down. I don't expect a Super Bowl every year but I would like our team to play/win one at least once a decade. I don't think that is too much to expect but that low expectation hasn't been met.

Of course it's not. It's an expectation of the majority of the teams in the NFL. Even if they go a long time not winning a super bowl, you can guarantee they are going to win a playoff game here and there. Not us. 11-5 is a successful season here.

2011 was Mayhew's worst draft ever. Yet we made the playoffs in 2011. That's how good he is. Lions are loaded with Super caliber talent

yup mayhew knew he needed to go get talent since he had no idea what the fuck he was doing....ever. I agree.

2010 draft class....poof
2011 ....poof

They would have been free agents anyway.

2009 great, 2012 good, 2013 great, 2014 TBD. Free agency great, trades great

Mayhew still gets an A even with 2010 and 2011 not working out.

Here are some fun playoff facts since the Lions last won a playoff game.

In 23 seasons (1992-2014)...

- 4 New Franchises (Carolina & Jacksonville-1995, Baltimore-1996, Houston-2002)

- Every team has made at least 2 playoff appearances in this time

- The Lions are tied for 18th in playoff appearances with 7, 3 teams below them are post-95 expansion teams

- 30 different teams have won at least one playoff game, including all 4 post-95 expansion teams, the only other winless playoff team is the Cincinnati Bengals

- 29 different teams have won multiple playoff games, including all 4 post-95 expansion teams, the others are Cincinnati with 0 wins and Cleveland with 1 win

- 25 different teams have each won at least 5 playoff games, including 3 post-95 expansion teams

- 22 different teams have made at least one Super Bowl appearance, including 2 post-95 expansion teams

- 13 different teams have won at least one Super Bowl, including 1 post-95 expansion team

The only teams that are remotely close to the Lions in terms of playoff success (or lack thereof) are...

Cincinnati (6 appearances, 0 wins)
Cleveland (2 appearances, 1 win)
Kansas City (9 appearances, 2 wins)

Lions have a really good roster without him. Got Ngata and Walker. Great job Mayhew. Great job not overpaying for a greedy 19 per turd. 17 per was the correct offer. Suh going to do what he wants. Fairley had his chances, Walker's time to shine. He earned it with a strong 2014.

Plenty of top 5 defenses without Suh. Lions have a good Dline and great back 7 and a draft still to come. Plus there offense is about to explode with a healthy offensive line again.

Suh's contract is essentially a 4 year contract at just under 18 million per year. So an extra 900k or so isn't a big deal compared to the 17 million you wanted to offer.

If Lions offered what Miami did you would be defending this contract up and down. Saying it was brilliant, give him the big number but make him cuttable in 4 years. It would give the Lions options. Plus with the cap number going up it will look even better down the road.

Now I think they overpaid I was in the 15-16 million max for a DT, but if you're at 17 there isn't much of a different between 17 per and 17.9 per.

They could have made 19 per work. That is a fact. I think 17 per is an overpay too that they did offer. Both are overpays. I think the moves they made to get Ngata proved it was smart to not overpay him. I wanted him back but them getting Ngata made me very very happy.

But we'll find out on the field soon enough. Many ways to make a top 5 defense. There were four other defenses this year that didn't have Suh on the team.

Ngata great pickup when all things considered but he is no Suh. Trust me, other teams in division are ecstatic he is gone. Walker is a crap shoot and Fairly will be missed.

Fariley missed half the year. Walker for 16 with just as much Fairley potential.

Ngata is better in run defense and will take the doubles. He's an all pro too.

Lions still have a very good Dline with those two Ansah, Jones and solid DE backups. Especially with Ngata taking the doubles to free up everyone else.

Still, we did not get better, we regressed. Additionally, we did not address the OLine for depth either. That's what happens when you play with extensions. This team is going nowhere.

We got better. Year 2 of systems. Loaded team still. We are better

Well they sprinted to the altar of Stafford and gave him that extension two years in advance. That jacked up everything.

Before the draft is over, we can't say with any certainty whether the team is better or worse. Suh+Fairely is better than Ngata+Walker, and Mathis is a year older, but everything else is pretty much unchanged. The team still has a chance to make significant improvements in the draft to shore up a different spot. Also, the LBs should be better with a healthy Tulloch.

If we can draft solid starters at OG and RT, that could be a huge boost, for example. I don't know if that makes the team better, but I think we can tread water with an adequate draft.

The bigger difference now is the schedule is substantially tougher. Road games at Seattle, San Diego are probably losses, and at NO is always tough.

And throw in Arizona, Denver, San Fran, Philly for your home games instead of Buffalo, NO, Miami, Tampa Bay.
