That?s some seriously high praise for the Lions? first-round pick.

ESPN panel not very optimistic about Detroit Lions? next 3 years.
The Lions? front office hasn?t gained much faith yet.

The next three years are absolutely crucial for general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia. The team took over a mediocre Detroit Lions team last year and quickly turned them into a bottom-10 team.

That has likely shortened their leash on the franchise and their plans for a full culture change. If Martha Ford doesn?t see results in the next couple years, both of their jobs will undoubtedly be on the line. She didn?t hesitate to move on from Martin Mayhew midseason a few years ago.

But a panel of three ESPN analysts?Louis Riddick, Kevin Seifer and Field Yates?aren?t very optimistic about their ability to turn it around that quickly. On Tuesday, ESPN released what they?re calling ?NFL Future Power Rankings? (Insider required) projecting how each team will perform in the next three years. Rankings were based on five different criteria: quarterback, rest of the roster, draft, front office and coaching.

Based on those rankings, the Lions came in all the way at 21st. The rankings were especially unfavorable to Patricia, who came in at 26th among coaching rankings. Seifert was brutal in his criticism of the Lions head coach.

?This ranking could improve if Detroit?s next coach is better than Patricia,? Seifert wrote.

Ouch.

Is the Lions secondary still a concern going into the season?
Bleacher Report thinks that despite all of the Lions? changes in the secondary, there are still too many questions.

The start of the NFL season isn?t that far away. We?re currently in the worst possible week of our waiting right now. Camp is literally right around the corner, and we?re stuck with just one more week of baseball and likely no Lions news until it?s time to have nothing but Lions news.

With that week comes one more week of speculation on what the potential problem with the Lions will be in 2020. Bleacher Report put out their list of biggest concerns for each team before the season starts and they believe the Lions biggest issue is their ?unsorted secondary.? Here are some of the concerns the listed:

The Detroit Lions have a multilayered issue in the secondary. For starters, cornerback Darius Slay didn?t commit to showing up at training camp. ?Will I be there? We?ll see. Time will tell,? he said on The Pride Podcast (h/t Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press).

Teez Tabor hasn?t developed into a capable starter; he doesn?t have an interception or a pass breakup in 22 contests. Rashaan Melvin had an underwhelming year in Oakland, logging nine pass breakups and one interception after registering three picks and 13 pass breakups with the Colts in 2017. The Lions hope he bounces back.

Detroit selected Amani Oruwariye in the fifth round of this year?s draft. Unless he?s a Day 3 gem, the Penn State product will go through rough stages in his transition. The 6?2?, 205-pounder needs to refine his footwork to keep up with quicker receivers on the perimeter.

These are all pretty valid points. For starters, they?re right about Slay. We still don?t know if he?ll report to camp at the end of the month. Usually these things tend to work themselves out, though. There?s a good chance the Lions will come to an agreement with Slay and Damon Harrison very soon. At least we hope so, right?

Oddly enough, as for everything else, the Lions secondary is expected to be something of a strength for the team in 2020 while the linebacking corps is the area everyone is concerned about.

B/R?s concerns are valid. But the Lions are pretty well stocked with capable players in their secondary, even if Tabor is an easy target to point at when looking for a weakness.

The Biggest Concern for Every NFL Team Before the Season Begins.
Detroit Lions: Unsorted Secondary.

https://www.detroitlionspodcast.com/christopher/2019/07/16/detroit-lions-podcast-making-grade/
Detroit Lions Podcast Episode 215 ? Lions Making The Grade. 76 minutes.

In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case cover the latest Lions offseason news including the new Madden rankings, Golden Tate and his words on Matthew Stafford, some offseason work that Stafford has put in with a couple of Lions receivers, the biggest concern for the 2019 Lions, and a lot more!

Detroit Lions Podcast Apologizes.
We start off with an apology for last week?s missing show. Chris had to leave town for work and the boys weren?t able to get together to put a show together. The promise to try and make it up to you though? After that we take on the biggest topic of the day, the Lions player rankings in Madden. Chris laments our two highest rated players holding out (Case tries to stem an aneurysm at Chris?s choice of words. With his new ?stache, it probably would have been a favor if he had). There are many obviously questionable choices and ratings that seem out of touch. It?s just another rating system that attempts to take some subjective information and quantify it. These are never perfect, but it is better than nothing?

Next on the Detroit Lions Podcast, we discuss Golden Tate and his reference to Matthew Stafford as the best quarterback that he?s ever played with.
Case seems to take exception and wants to dance around in the semantics of the situation. Chris (who seems to always be right ? mainly because he writes the show notes) has fun agitating Lt. Jim Dangle. If you don?t get the reference, take a look at this week?s episode on our YouTube channel (first cut releases on Thursday) and evaluate Case?s new look.

Summer Practice Builds Teamwork.
From there the Detroit Lions Podcast discusses the scene of Matthew Stafford?s offseason workout with Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola. After that we move on to cover an article posted by Reddit user /u/Waxxo discussing the biggest concern for the Detroit Lions in 2019. Case provides analysis while Chris finds a different area of concern for this team. Good discussion ensues.

The boys also talk about the latest rankings on the Lions offensive line as created by PFF. Case again makes his thoughts on PFF clear, Chris feels that they are as valid as the Madden rankings or any other ranking system. Helping to quantify the subjective is helpful, but always requiring further context.

Lastly the Detroit Lions Podcast covers an article posted by Reddit user /u/NFLFan84 in which each team?s biggest sleeper player was chosen. For the Lions, they chose CB Amani Oruwariye. We discuss what it means, and if the contribution of first year cornerbacks is about to push to the fore like it has for tight ends.
