Lions Working Hard With Avril

The Lions spent "most of the day" Sunday in long-term contract talks with free agent LE Cliff Avril.
Beat writer Dave Birkett is optimistic a deal could be struck before Monday's 4PM ET franchise tag deadline. Avril would likely be accepting a hometown discount if he signed before forcing the Lions' hand. He'd hit an absolute goldmine on the open market, appealing to both 4-3 teams as a defensive end and 3-4 clubs as a pass-rushing outside linebacker. We'll know more tomorrow.

What's the linebacker tag $$? If Avril is signed, does Tulloch get tagged?

Wow. That's higher than I expected.

They should seriously be working harder on Calvin's deal though. W/e.

I find all the hate for Avril very amusing. The guy has made some spectacular plays and become a very good pass rusher. Not bad for a 3rd round pick that was never gong to be any good. He needs to get better against the run but then again so does the entire defense.

We all have different opinions and mine is he is a direct influence of Suh. Keep a couple young guys or draft one and sign Tulloch. My opinion is we'll get similar production with someone else.

+1.

Ill even go as far to downplay his play a bit. man v man all year....11 sacks isnt that great. Great job with his strip sacks causing turnovers though....gotta admit. My biggest problem is his consistency....guys that make that much money should be a consistent presence and he disappears in a lot of games. Guys that make that much as a 4-3 DE are typically more well rounded of a player as well.

I dont disagree. I watched every game and got frustrated with the play of the entire defense at the end of the season. Avril needs to up his game there is absolutely no argument he needs to develop some more moves and some more power at the point of attack. But young pass rushers are hard to find. He is 25 years old and already a veteran who put up 11 sacks and 6 forced fumbles last season. He also had a pick six and showed rare athletic ability for someone at the DE position. There is a reason its important for the team to lock him up. To say anyone can play next to Suh and put up the same or better numbers is asinine.

If Avril is signed today(which I doubt), Tulloch will be tagged and traded

Better this than Avril tagged and Tulloch walking? Btw, aren't there two different tags, why not use both or do we not have the cap?

I dont believe you can do both anymore.......

edited: I found this, which says you cant do both

""Without any compensation going back to a player's original team, there's no cost for signing teams outside of the contract, and clubs can still structure deals that can make them very difficult for another club to match. Additionally, as part of this CBA, a team can franchise or transition a player, but can't do both, meaning the idea of using the transition tag as a fallback after a more desirable player is franchised doesn't exist.""

No team is going to trade a pick + pay a lot of $$$ for a Mike who only fits a few teams in a year where FA is loaded with quality Mikes. Maybe they'd do pick + $$$ for a young pass rusher, but definitely not Tulloch. At $8.8 million, he's not seeing that tag under any circumstances.

Just like nobody would trade an entire draft for a retired QB...

no team wants to pay the tag number.....buys time to trade or work out a long term deal. The tag number is irrelevant

Damnit, Raiders. They defy all logic. But they don't have any decent picks to trade this year, plus they're way over the cap, so its safe to ignore them for 2012.

Any Chance the Patriots would be interested in him? They have multiple low first round picks (they maybe willing to give up 1 of them) and some cap room...However this really doesn't seem like the Patriots normal way of doing business.

they'll draft a young player for 1/10 of the cost

Cliff Avril - DL - Lions

The Lions and franchise player DE Cliff Avril remain "far apart" in long-term negotiations.
MLive.com believes the odds of the Lions signing Avril long term this offseason are "very slim." Avril was strongly against being tagged, and has hinted he would consider holding out of team activities if not given a long-term deal. The sides have until July 16 to reach an agreement.

eating up almost 11 million in cap is a fucking joke for Avril.

If we get a guy like Mercilus in round 1, than im guessing hes a day 2 trade for a 2nd rd pick.
