I realize this is going to "shock" some people.

Top 10 Annual MLB Local TV Revenue

1. NYY - $385 Mil (thru 2033)
2. LAD - $334 Mil (thru 2039)
3. PHI - $200 Mil (thru 2041)
4. TEX - $155 Mil (thru 2035)
5. LAA - $147 Mil (thru 2030)
6. SEA - $141 Mil (thru 2032)
7. NYM - $119 Mil (thru 2031)
8. BOS - $114 Mil (thru ????)
9. CHC - $84 Mil (thru 2019)
10. TBR - $82 Mil (thru 2033)

**DET - $50 Mil (thru 2021)

Most MLB teams either own their networks or intend to own at the end of their current contract. The Yankees still have some percentage of the YES network, but they have sold off $2 Billion worth to Fox over the years. Still, at $385 Mil annually just from their local TV contract, they are not hurting. ***Average local TV contracts last 15-20 years***

At the end of 2019, the Cubs are expected to negotiate a new TV contract. If they acquire their own network, they could see it rise $80-100 Mil annually. The expectations is that they will be about $175-200 Mil annually.

With Disney buying local Fox Sports, now is the time for DET.

Also, most teams do NOT spend more than $40-45% in their "Real Revenue" on payroll. In 2017, DET spent 74.1% on payroll ($207.2 Mil), the worst in baseball by far. Their "Real Revenue" for the year was $279.7 Mil, compared to NYY's $534.9 Mil (almost double). Without a new TV contract, DET should not be having payroll anywhere near $130 Mil. Any difference between "Real Revenue" and payroll, is what they can put back into the team for "infrastructure". Minor league costs (facilities, staff, etc) and/or things like "analytics" at the MLB level. For years, DET "overspent" by $50-70 Mil per year, to try and compete. But that "crippled" their "infrastructure" and pushed back any timeline for a rebuild. FYI, the final numbers are not in, but 2018 "real revenue" for DET is not expected to top $250 Mil (40% of $250 Mil = $100 Mil) and they spent $135 Mil on payroll. Meaning, even in a "rebuild" year, they "overspent" by $35 Mil.

For teams making double what DET does on local TV contracts, a outlay of $6 Mil for an AAAA Starter is not a big issue. Spending on it for DET, means that $6 Mil cannot be used to bolster their poor infrastructure.

I won't blame Mr. I. He gave us a bunch of teams that were good including two WS appearances. And we saw a ton of good players .. Imo, the blame goes to the GM/scouting who hadn't drafted well to set us up down the line. You can spend and then lower it and still be competitive if you draft well. Bottom Line, DD is to blame a lot, with his drafting. It sucks that the team is not good now, no great prospects on the way but without the spending and the ability to not draft well we never would have had years of success and end point we'd still be bad.

It's just that without a WS win, the thing Mr. I wanted so bad, he kept on signing the problem was our GM went after the wrong guys. The mistake he made which I believed was his idea, to give Miggy a 10 year deal.

based on Reb's post, when he was overspending by $50-$70M per year, they were not investing in the infrastructure. In all likelihood, that includes the scouting department, player development, etc. Add to that, illogical timing of the Miggy extension (that was at the direction of Mr I) and signing Zimmerman when they should have been looking to re-build is the reason they are where they are.

But without knowing how to draft would we be any better today? Maybe no Zimmerman and a lower payroll but the wins wouldn't be there. At least I don't think so. We'd still have a sub par MiL system. So spend or don't spend we'd stink because we can't draft. So "they are where they are" was inevitable.

The Tigers gotta get that one guy who scouted Derek. That guy is going right straight to Cooperstown.

That's the point...If they put $50-$70M into their scouting department (paying for top scouting personnel) they would probably have drafted better.

How much do they put in now? I didn't realize payroll and scouting money went hand in hand? Esp. for a non cap sport.

As far as number of scouts I thought Detroit was on the high side.

Only 3 teams at the time had more scouts, NYY, Boston & Cleveland.

Mr I's pizza had a very profitable 2018.Their Bestest Mostest and Thin Crust have prospered.

that's not a list of their current scouts. Hell, Bill Lajoie was on that list and he was dead in 2013

Yes but I suspect if they had that many scouts 5 years ago they still have. My point was Detroit had a lot of scouts 5 years ago. They're just not very good or maybe even more possible DD override them all.

Must be a mere coincidence that Tigers amateur scouting has ratings-improved, ever since David Chadd was transferred to the assistant GM chair a couple drafts ago.

This was in 2013.. Seems Detroit has their fair share of scouts..

Though it was DD who always decided to go hard throwing pitcher year after year. He made the final decisions, like all GM.

what I was telling you is that is not a list of active scouts (even in 2013). It is just a Wipikedia listing of scouts associated with the team. Click on any of the scouts and a lot of them aren't in baseball, many are and have been dead for years. (Joe Holden)...he died in 1996. Ned Pettigrew (also on the list) died in 1952.

I would have never imagined that that occupation would have been anywhere near that hazardous.
