and Tinsel, I don't think reporters typically have to check every single fact, but in a case like this, where the hype is clearly benefiting the guy & his heisman campaign, should there be a degree of scrutiny? Yes.
if a guy just says "I won this for my wife and kids." No big deal. no duty to check up on that. Now if he is giving interviews about how his son is dying of cancer and he's out there winning it for him, and his team is rallying around him... well, maybe just maybe someone would want to risk being seen as a cold-hearted bastard and double check that one...
