1. gets ridiculed all season about giving the important players too many days off, and now we're sitting atop the Central and everyone is rested.

2. almost everyone also ridiculed his lineups, yet we are..

4th in Runs
3rd in Batting average
5th in on base percentage
4th in Slugging percentage

So maybe with playing his best at all times we'd have the best record in the AL. Just sayin'. You could say the Tigers' are in first despite Leyland.

One could say that but that person would be a moron. For all of the bitching and whining about Leyland and DD they both have done a good job this year. DD's trades at the deadline and getting DY were great moves.

..... utmost thanks to his boss Dave Dombrowski, who provided multiple changes to the roster during the summer.

Ouch Mitch!

I haven't been a Leyland backer since July 2007. That's when Jim changed gears and changed his game management style.

But right around mid-May, Leyland realized he was a lame duck going in the wrong direction and reverted back to his pre-July 2007 management style.

So in combination with the many successful moves Dombrowski made beginning around the first of July, I am fine with Leyland returning in 2012, provided he continues his current management style that we've seen since mid-May

You know the deal in Detroit

Leyland gets no credit in wins

Leyland gets most of the blame in losses

Typical fans are to blame for that. Knowledgeable followers of MLB do not grade Leyland that way.

I am fine with someone not giving Leyland any credit for the success as long as that same person doesn't blame him for failures.

The only thing that Leyland has done that has bothered me, is that he batted Jackson and Maggs all year at the top of the line up.

Leyland has done a fine job as our manager. I wouldn't say he is great, but he isn't the worst in baseball as some people say.

I'm also fine with us bringing him back next year. Hopefully we can find somebody that can take his place when the change needs to be made, but I'm not sure there is anybody that we could have gotten for next year that would be better than what we have.

Use of different defensive lineups

KCR 54
NYY 65
CHW 71
BAL 74
BOS 75
TBR 79
LAA 84
OAK 101
TEX 102
DET 106
TOR 108
CLE 109
SEA 116
MIN 127

2010 = 118
2009 = 94
2008 = 110
2007 = 92
2006 = 92

DET Players who have started

C = 3
1B = 3
2B = 6
3B = 6

SS = 2
LF = 6
CF = 4
RF = 6

DET Players who have started at least 20 games

C = 2
1B = 1
2B = 4
3B = 3
SS = 1
LF = 4
CF = 1
RF = 2

The key is the number of different players at 2B, 3B and LF.

Another is Boesch. He started 54 in LF and 45 in RF. But each time, depending on who played C, 1B, 2B... it might have counted as a different lineup. Guys like Kelly (5) and Raburn (4), used at 3 or more positions, also impact DET's total.

DET has used 34 different batters. Only KCR, LAA and TEX have had fewer, 33.

You just described every manager, coach etc. out there.

Leyland has not been terrible, but he has not been great either.

You people are forgetting he let Magglio bat 3rd forever, hurting Miggy and Vmart.

He lat Ryan Raburn get too many PA's while he could not hit, and now that he is hitting? He's on the bench more than ever.

Raburn was stuck into a big defensive position he is incapable of playing to even an average level.

He routinely let some of his starters go when it was obvious they needed to come out, he probably cost us 10 games this year from that alone.

He refused to let Alex Avila hit higher than 7th for the majority of the season.

Worship him if you want, but I'm not too blind to see Leyland is not the reason we're winning.

I don't think he should be fired, he's doing an adequate job, but let's not make it out like he is a genius or something, cause he's not.

So his pitching decisions cost the Tigers 10 games? That would mean that they should be 94-52. How many games did the rest of his blunders cost the team? With your logic the Tigers should have 100 wins already!

No one is forgetting who batted where, but there is no way any of us can say things would've been better with other orders. We didn't have DY than or Betemit, he used what he had and it kept us in contention until he got more bats. There are those of you out there that would still complain if we were 161-1

Cost us 10 games?

Would he ever get credit for putting out a lineup that results in a win?

Good post I stood by Leyland while he was the speedbag of the Tigers board. I have always said he is a top 5 manager. Lots of people eating crow this year.

I for one ridiculed him at both, who was to know we'd get Young and Betemit. when your batting lineup is as deep as ours is now, you can get away with resting players. this wasn't the case earlier in the season, when we needed every good bat in the lineup.
