Apparently they 7-year peak did Lou in. Lame.
Of those eligible, only 2 x 2B have a higher 7yr-peak and not in the HoF.
B. Grich 71.1 WAR / 46.4 7yr-peak WAR / 58.7 JAWS
C. Knoblach 44.8 WAR / 38.6 7yr-peak WAR / 41.7 JAWS
L. Whitaker 75.1 WAR / 37.9 7yr-peak WAR / 56.5 JAWS
There are 10 HoF 2B with less of a 7yr-peak WAR than Whitaker. Examples:
N. Fox 49.0 WAR / 36.8 7yr-peak / 42.9 JAWS
B. Doerr 51.2 WAR / 36.4 yr-peak / 43.8 JAWS
R. Schoendienst 42.3 WAR / 31.7 yr-peak WAR / 37.0 JAWS
B. Mazeroski 36.5 WAR / 26.0 7yr-peak WAR / 31.2 JAWS
To put 7yr-peak WAR in context
**J. Altuve = 36.9 7yr-peak WAR
There are currently 20 2B in the HoF. Whitaker rankings:
WAR = 7th
7yr-peak WAR = 11th
JAWS = 10th
Somebody please explain why he isn't in.
Oh, and the averages are skewed by the top three 2B (in all three categories), who were mostly from the dead ball era:
R. Hornsby 127.0 WAR / 73.5 7yr-peak WAR / 100.2 JAWS
E. Collins 124.0 WAR / 64.2 7yr-peak WAR / 94.1 JAWS
N. Lajoie 107.4 WAR / 60.4 7yr-peak WAR / 83.9 JAWS
Post World War II, only Morgan and Carew have higher WAR. Morgan, Carew, Sandberg, Grich, and J. Robinson have higher JAWS. For 7yr-peak, add Knoblach. That is it. That is his competition of the people already eligible or are in the Hall. I would argue if Whitaker is in, so is Grich and vice versa.
