Maggs annoucing his retirement Sunday

Had some good years with the Tigers. Seemed like a gamble when they first signed him, but in the end I think it was worth it.

$99.2 Mil over 7 years (avg $14.2 Mil per season)

Only 4 season with at least 130 games played. The other 3 seasons = 82, 84 and 92 Games Played.

When he was healthy, he was OK. Meaning her earned his money. However, for the length of service, he was overpaid in my opinion for what we got in return.

I agree with you.

I understand your point, but disagree with him being overpaid.

When you consider what he meant tor this organization over the last 8 years you could make an argument he was UNDERpaid.

He got in NO trouble. He recruited FA. Played hard. Was a good community guy. Gave every Tiger fan their first memorable moment since '87 and was one of the guys who helped turn this organization around. If every $14.2 MILLION spent by the Tigers were spent with the effectiveness that it was on Magglio Ordonez this organization would have a World Series banner or two flying that read more recently than 1984.

He was paid to hit and drive in runs. He only drove in 100 RBIs 3 times in 7 years.

Rankings in Salary

2005 = 103rd

2006 = 10th (8th non-pitcher)
2007 = 27th (22nd non-pitcher)
2008 = 15th (11th non-pitcher)
2009 = 7th (7th non-pitcher)
2010 = 17th (12th non-pitcher)

2011 = 78th (46th non-pitcher)

For the bulk of the contract, he was paid as a top 15 player (top 12 hitter). He provided that production in maybe 3 of the 7 years. Certainly 2007 was a stellar year.

Career Playoffs (mostly with DET)

.227 BAVG .301 OBP .400 SLG .701 OPS 9 RBIs in 83 PA (on pace for 70 RBIs in 650 PA)

Again, there was key moments throughout his Tiger career. The sum does not equal the whole.

So a players impact on an organization is strictly HR & RBI??

not strictly but mostly.

Congratulations to Magglio Ordonez on a fine career.
Maggs was good to excellent and one year just Great when healthy, just his getting older and hurt more the last couple years with Detroit, it happens.
I will be grateful to him and Pudge before him for coming to the Tigers, overpaid or not, before these two and Carlos, none of the superstar players wanted to sign with our Tigers.
Now Free Agents will listen and sign, or at least listen.
I would bet that everyone of us had the 'tears of joy' in our eyes when Maggs hit the walkoff homerun.

He still was good to have him here in Detroit. Overpaid, just about everyone is overpaid, the key hits in 2006 and what a year in 2007. For me, he was worth it just for that.

Exactly. I've got very fond memories of Carlos, Maggs, Pudge, Sheff and Rogers even though many here relentlessly bash these guys. They were all gamers, all very competitive, and all part of turning things around here.

The first 4 years of Carlos were good but the last 4 were terrible. They never should have re-signed him. I never really liked Sheffield.

The final years for Maggs, Carlos and Sheff looked bad because they got hurt. They could still play, they just couldn't get healthy.

Meant to include Kenny Rogers and Sheffield in my previous post, glad you added them.

and that's true, I think many might forget that before Sheff and Polanco collided on the shallow pop fly, Sheffield was on some sort of near pace of a 40/40 season, homeruns and stolen bases, banged up his shoulder, got an impingement and wasn't the same.

You bet. That was an awesome moment.

For many of the reasons you mentioned, especially the attention paid to Detroit by FA because of Pudge and Maggs, I cannot ever consider him overpaid.

I think he was only overpaid if you look at his final contract, and the fact that he was injured.

But I agree with Bob, while he was here...worth every penny.

We have overpaid players far worse, Higgy, Juan gone, Inge....
