Maggs annoucing his retirement Sunday

I think he was only overpaid if you look at his final contract, and the fact that he was injured.

But I agree with Bob, while he was here...worth every penny.

We have overpaid players far worse, Higgy, Juan gone, Inge....

I don't know....the Tigers paid Maggs over $99 million over 7 years. He only averaged 121 games a year, 15.3 HR and 76 RBI. He had one great year and a couple of good years. I wouldn't call that money well spent.

121 games isn't all that bad. But he was good for us and needed at the same time. Coming off a 119 loss season.

Juan is a bad memory.. And I am at fault because I thought he would be great...

121 games a year isn't too bad but 15.3 HR and 77 RBI is terrible for a guy that was averaging over $14 million per year.

119 losses tells me he was paid just fine. Just like the rest that came during that time.

They probably could have thrown $99 million at another player that would have had better production.

You assume guys were just running to a 119 loss team. They had to overpay to get guys here. You do understand that, right?

yes....But not many people turn down $100M...Maggs didn't. He was way over paid based on his production.

Then tell me who would have come running here, free agents that year? Its not as black and white as you make it sound. There are a number of guys, take out the ones that don't want to play in Detroit, take out the ones who aren't very good etc and there aren't a whole lot left.

So its Magglio or no one. We were better with him.

Had some good years with the Tigers. Seemed like a gamble when they first signed him, but in the end I think it was worth it.

He was one of the most dependable hitters in Tiger history. Clutch even outside of his historic game winner

If you want to look at it from JUST the statistical standpoint....then yes. But from the standpoint of all the other things he brought to the Tigers in terms of future FA, team chemistry, off field efforts and one GIGANTIC, HISTORIC Homerun....he was certainly worth every fuckin penny they spent.

Another one of my favorite moments from Maggs is one a lot of people probably have forgotten about because the Tigers lost.

I think they were behind in a game to the Angels in LA (thanks to one of Bondo's infamous 1st inning debacles) by a score of 8-0. As usual, Bondo settled down, and they kept chipping away at the lead. Finally Maggs smacked a 3 run-homer in the top of the 9th to give the Tigers their first lead. I remember saying to myself "Maggs I will never say a bad thing about you again." Well as was also often the case, Jones went gas-can in the bottom of the 9th and the Angels wound up winning 11-10, or something.

But I still remember Maggs' homer cuz it capped off such a big come-back. It's not often you take the lead after being down by 8 runs.
