big difference...Fairley makes peanuts....fully guaranteeing 30+ on a short contract is risky.

my guess is the Lions wanted more years.

most of the $30 guaranteed comes early anyways.....the only thing I would do is have a 6yr contract where the SB can be spread out longer. If that's what Avril wants, I cant see this dragging out too far

Would MM really turn down a team's trade offer that includes a R1 or early R2 plus maybe even a R3 or R4 on top? Granted it would depend on exactly who the Lions got, but that seems like a steal to me. For starters, the rookie cap ensures extra money even after signing 2 or even 3 rooks for less than Avril's contract. Heck, could even use those picks for moving up in the draft to get one of the best DE's in the draft. JPP is the new prototype DE, athletic and able to actually follow Schwartz mandate of playing the run on the way to the QB. Give me that type of athlete over Avril anyday...and save money for other positions of need. That would be a dream come true, IMHO.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Colts DE Robert Mathis' new contract is worth $36 million over four seasons.
The deal includes a $15M signing bonus and $24M over the first two seasons. Because the initial bonus payment can prorate over the contract's life if Mathis is released early on, the Colts are rolling the dice that Mathis has at least three big years left in him. Mathis, 31, tallied 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 16 games last season. He will play more with his hand up in Indianapolis, perhaps in the Terrell Suggs role for Chuck Pagano's hybrid defense.

15 mil guaranteed isn't too bad for 4 years..

24 million over the first 2 years....15 million is only the signing bonus

The first 2 years is key. If he's getting that much at 31, Avril wouldn't sign for a dime less.

I just read that Buffalo is gonna go after V-Jax even with Johnson signed because they have a ton of cap space. Buddy Nix has also said pass rush will be a huge priority. Could this be a trade partner? 2nd and 3rd/4th? They have the money to pay him, and they clearly want to win now. I'm warming up a little to the trade idea.

Indy is going to need to get at least 3 years out of Mathis to come out a winner in that deal.
