Mayhew Speaks

If moore and werner are gone...joekel is your bpa. Remember, reiff was projected more as a rt in the nfl anyways. Trade down you could target milliner or vacarro....but there's not really that impact player in this years draft that teams will make a big move for. Moore, werner and joekel are all gone we'll be stuck with a undersized project like mingo or a top 5 lb like teo. /puke

He better....hes a round 1 tackle. I was just pointing out that you dont rule out joekel just cause we have reiff on the roster.

We need defense. Would I be upset with Joekel? No. But we need defense bad.

Surprisingly the overall numbers say Detroit's D was middle of the pack in 2012 14th against the pass, 16th against the run. The biggest weak spot on paper was the run game coming in at 23rd in 2012.

Having said that we need DE's!! IMO.. they couldn't get much pressure on QB's for shit most of the year.

DE definitely. But regardless what it shows, at end game the defense sucked.

Some teams can cover if the DL gets no pressure. We need that too. No team gets rush on every play.

im definitely on board with a DE and have been on the damontre moore train since november. Problem occurs if moore and werner get picked before us. Theres not really another DE that is top 5 material and you typically dont see Mayhew reaching for a need. I especially dont see him reaching at the #5 pick in the draft. Mingo would probably be the next guy teams would be looking at at DE if moore and werner are gone. Hes underweight for our system, raw, and goes entire games where he completely dissappears...i dont know if thats the kind of guy were looking for when were trying to replace immediate starters. If were stuck with a project Ansah is atleast 260+ lbs....again, #5 pick is probably high for him and he couldnt even accumulate stats in college against inferior competition. Joekel or trade down would probably be the BPA pick if werner and moore are gone. If not ur reaching for need on Milliner or reaching for need on Mingo.

Until yesterday I was 100% on board with DE first round but I've seen some video and have been drinking some serious Te'o kool-aid today. :p Wouldn't be disappointed with DE but that dude is a beast.

I cant see the Lions going into week one with two rookie OT...ya, Reiff played, but not at OT(only one game)

Yeah they have talent but experience is huge in the NFL as the DES especially at Right End all have the top talent too. All depends on Backus retiring. If he does, then they try to get Gosder back or another similar experience vet Right Tackle to Gosder.

Short term I would be pretty nervous with Joeckel/Reiff but long term Joeckel and Reiff as book ends might be awesome for this organization. You could potentially get the pass protection AND the run blocking we've always wanted and lacked from Gosder and Backus. Backus and Gosder are just good pass protection guys and lacked the killer run blocking. And Gosder is just recent a good pass protector in the last 2 years.

Crayola wont be around forever either. What if backus retires and crayola decides to go with him. Neglecting oline dpeth will kill us at some point and it could happen as early as this year. Its why i think Barret Jones is a perfect guy to draft in round 2 since he can play C, G or emergency tackle. Like i said...im down for DE.....but moore and werner are the only 2 worth a top 5 pick and they might be gone.

Crayola just might get an extension. It wouldn't surprise me.

Bill Nagy was a starter in Dallas and could replace Raiola. I like Jones alot more though if he's there in Round 2 and BPA over a safety.

But are you seriously clamoring about depth right now for Raiola or playing for Raiola in the future when you bash the Reiff and Broyles picks. Draft for immeditate need is the Mayhew haters style and that's REACHING for a DE or Millner if Werner and Moore are gone and taking a safety in Round 2 no matter what. Those are the big immediate needs barring free agency.

Any chance of signing Jake Long? If we get rid of KVB/Durant and let Avril/Gosder/Backus walk, won't then open up enough money? Then Draft a de with the 5th pick.

i loved the reiff pick....just was not happy we didnt play him. Was he really not better than gosder? OUr choaches are dumb and played him at fb all year. Drafting your center for the next 10 years is slightly different than picking a #4 WR that wasnt even projected to play for you last year. give me a little bit of credit man lol. Ive also been clarmoing to fix the oline and secondary for the last 20 years lol. So if we came out of the 13' draft with Joekel, reiff and barret jones on our oline....i couldnt hate that. Right now my hope is:
1 Moore
2 Werner
3 Joekel
but like ive said previously....theres a very good chance all THREE of those guys are gone by our pick. Then we get put in a predicament where were reaching for need like Milliner which is not Mayhews MO...grabbing Teo which isnt really a need but probably BPA....or grabbing a project like Mingo. Jarvis Jones i cross off my draft board...hes definitely more of a 3-4 outside rush LB. If we even consider a DT at 5 like Lotulelei than Mayhew should be shot on site lol. The only other guy i could even think of drafting is Warmack.

Gosder played very well this year. Backus had a good year at well, he gave up 1 sack week 1 in 700 plus attempts. Experience wins out. Peterman is a Yarno guy and had a good 2011 coming in but Peterman was bad in pass protection in 2012. Switching positions for Reiff isn't the best deal. Like I said, they wanted to use the 3 tackle package, having Reiff as a backup tackle is the best way to do that. If Gosder played poorly you might have a point. Backus did well in pass pro and no way was being unseated even though he did atrocious run blocking.

And Broyles may be our slot receiver for 10 years helping move the chains with Calvin. Mayhew clearly saw Burleson's age and his cap number was going to get big so he planned ahead. And Broyles was incredibly productive in college and was a fast healer. Now the Lions have the ability to go DE, safety and interior Oline if they want.
