Mayhew Speaks

I guess every other team in the division doesn't improve or gets worse.

It's all about the Lions improving. If they do that they can beat anybody not just compete in closs loses with anybody like this year.

Maybe we don't have 7 turnovers against the Bears in 2 games next year or 5 in 2 games against the Packers or 4 in one game against Arizona with our weapons back.

Slow down Peterson enough is the name of the game against the Vikings. DE and Safety plus Delmas actually playing agains them and the Packers might help that.

That's nice. I guess no CB and he passes on his need for a S.

If they are BPA he doesn't.

But if Joeckel is BPA, then a speed RB and then a WR. That might be our draft. He did say he wanted to add defensive game changers especially on the back end though and his backup safety plan sucked

When he says he wants certain positions but goes BPA, those certain position will probably not happen.

In what warped mind were those half dozen crappy Cbs BPA?

If that's our draft, we'll 4-12 again.

Depends on free agency at DE and safety and getting Houston and Delmas back.

Better run game, maybe even interior if Backus hangs around and Reiff slides to guard for Peterman for a year and better redzone and more explosive plays from 2 more players. Offense limts the turnovers, maybe not 4-12.

We need a DE in the draft, not a 34 year old FA plus I'm not sure how much cash we have. And we need a number 1 CB in the draft and a S in the draft. Get a G though FA.

20-25 million but alot of expired contracts(23) and KVB and Burleson as cap casualties. And if they extend Stafford like Mayhew hinted even more than that.

Let Avril, Corey Williams walk in free agency and cut Peterman as a cap casualty as well.

Re-sign Houston and Delmas will take up a good chunk of that. One of the OLBs back from Levy or Durant.

Gosder re-sign depends on if Backus retires.

http://www.freep.com/article/201301...shlee-Palmer-Don-Carey-to-contract-extensions

Lions just re-signed Palmer to a 2 year deal. Carey to a 1 year deal. Palmer did well on special teams and a solid job with Levy out against Seattle and Jacksonville. Carey played the best out of all the crappy backups, maybe even better than Spievey.

Spievey is cleared for contact. But I won't hold my breath after 2 concussiosn now. He is a restricted free agent.

We need young top talent on defense. I doubt you get a young DE or S through FA. Then you'd have to overpay them to get them here.

Agreed I'm in the DE and Safety boat in the draft as well. KVB, Young Jackson about 90% of the time and Avril 75% of the games made me sick. But we still get better even with Joeckel, a speed back in Round 2 and a burner in Round 3. We'll know well before the draft if we have knocked off any needs in free agency.

If Backus plays one more year, they re-sign Gosder and have Reiff, taking Joeckel makes no sense. Or even just re-signing Gosder or somenoe equivalent, Joeckel wouldn't make much sense unless you are moving Reiff to guard full time.

Its not just about getting better. Its about getting better on your weakest area's. How many times did we give up a score late when we needed to make a stop? We need more defensive help. Go get a Wide out or Speed back through FA.

I agree it would be a gamble not getting a young DE. Someone to equal Avrils 2011 performance is the starting point. Is there a cheaper version of Avril out there with just as much talent, hopefully more run defense talent? KVB is done and Young can't do it based on this year. But getting the stud DE is the best bet. Hope they prove to be BPA over Joeckel.

Safety I think we could get by as long as Delmas stays healthy. But that's a gamble in itself which Mayhew lost year last year. Carey played solid down the stretch but we'd need to see much more from him next year.

Delmas the last part of 2011 and much of 2012, big gamble. And its not like we didn't need help there even with Delmas.

I'm under the notion that they should skip drafting any offensive players in this years' draft. I mean there isn't really a Best-like RB in the draft this year is there? And even if there was offensive depth is not this team's biggest problem. Doesn't matter if you average 30 points a game if you're always giving up 31. The problems at offense would have gone largely unnoticed this year if they'd been better on D. Teams trying to get themselves back to relevance need to build around D, IMO. I think the draft should go DE, S, CB, DE, S, CB, S. Get a guard via FA, agreed. A kick returner can be found internally. Our ST is a disaster that's not going to be solved in just one off-season anyway. The Lions proved this year that getting DBs off the scrap heap doesn't work.

Kenjon Barner.

It's a good sign he played the last 3 games though injury free and unlimited for the most part.

I wonder if it will knock off anything from his price tag. One would hope

I just want another S who can help with run support and make a tackle.
