Mayhew Speaks

you keep assuming mayhew will make smart moves....what if he retains burleson and kvb?...then can i bookmark this and come back and make fun of mayhew every week?

You know he will, hence the crickets.

Why not if they're better than the current guys. Make it stronger for 2014.

its comments by Schwartz saying he likes the OL continuity....throwing 2 new young OT goes against his statements. Personally I wouldnt hate the pick of Joeckel.
However, DE is a major ???? and getting a top notched DB/S besides Houston/Delmas is a must

We've been thinking a CB was major draft need past two years. IMO, no way do they draft a CB in the first 2.

Who says we don't draft need? Those string of mid round dbs smacked of desperately trying to fill holes. Hell everyone argues rb and wr picks were to fill future needs, Mayhew like his predecessor are just horrible drafters.

I don't assume. He does make smart moves. If Burleson takes a decent pay cut it's smart to keep him for Broyles injury insurance. Burleson hinted at doing that in the article on him on MLive.

If he keeps KVB and Burleson on their current cap numbers now, which he won't it will be two bad moves. But the good still far outweighs the bad.

KVB I would rather just cut ties even if he is willing to take a huge pay cut. He better not be a starter next year. That will be a bad move pay cut or not. But with his cap number, he won't be back.

Nothing wrong with retaining Burleson, at the right price. He has been productive here, knows the system and basically serves the role of WR coach. Again, at the right price.

KVB??? Unless he wants to play for the vet. minimum....he has to go. Completely unproductive for his salary.

That is IF Houston and Delmas are resigned.

If not.....we are in a world of hurt.

Houston is the one I think might leave if given the chance. It will be interesting to see what his asking price will be.
Delmas injury bug might help us.
Houston & Delmas will probably cost us $2-3M/yr/pp over the 2012 salary.

i agree with Houston, but he is our most important free agent and HAS to be resigned. The drop off from Houston to his backup is bigger than any other drop off from starter to reserve on the team....(except CJ, of course).

idk.....Houston to Bentley
or Delmas to .....? (fill in the blank).

Houston played most/all of the year, basically we played most of the year with backups at safety, even when Delmas was in I think he was still hurt

Delmas had a bad year. Period. I'm absolutely sure injuries played a huge part in it....but injuries aside....he took a lot of bad angles this year. The one that sticks out the most is game 16 on the 60 yard WR screen for a TD by Bennett. CB gets blocked. Delmas just takes off right at the WR trying to make a big hit, but with no thought that he is last line of defense on the play. He doesn't break down.....doesn't realize the CB got blocked to the inside and he needs to force the play back inside. WR simply breaks outside and jogs....untouched....down the sideline for a TD.

Delmas needs to realize that even though he has tremendous talent....he can't play wreckless football at this level. Mentally or physically.

we need to get rid of everyone on our defense not named fairley, suh, houston, tulloch and durant. Thats 6 new starters you need.....get to work mayhew! Make me a believer! LMAO!!! Funniest part is 2 of those guys arent even signed.....so at this point he needs 8 new starters on defense.

Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew loves receivers and is not ashamed

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew believes acquiring receivers to help quarterback Matthew Stafford is the best way to build a team.
AP File Photo ALLEN PARK -- Few people know what Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew loves to have for breakfast, but everyone knows which position he loves the most.

Mayhew loves to acquire receivers, whether it is through the NFL draft or free agency. He is constantly compared to previous Lions general manager Matt Millen, who still has receivers Charles Rogers, Roy Williams and Mike Williams on his resume.

When Mayhew took over late in 2008, he picked up where Millen left off. He drafted Derrick Williams (third round), Tim Toone (seventh round), Titus Young (second round) and Ryan Broyles (second round) in four drafts. Mayhew also traded for Mike Thomas (2012) and signed free agents Bryant Johnson (2009) and Nate Burleson (2010).

Detroit recently signed 12 players to futures contract, and six of those athletes were receivers.

Mayhew may love receivers more than most NFL general managers, but refuses to shy away from acquiring athletes at that position heading into the 2013 season.

"I'll keep loving them. I got to pick them better." - Martin Mayhew"I tell you what. If those guys play and do well, then nobody complains about you drafting them," Mayhew said. "You look at Green Bay, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Greg Jennings, all those guys; Randall Cobb. All those guys were draft choices, and they're all doing very well. I'll keep loving them. I got to pick them better."

So far, Mayhew's receivers have not had a major impact.

Burleson has been solid, but sustained a season-ending broken leg in 2012. Young was sent home three times last season for his insubordination, while Broyles tore his ACL in college and re-injured his other knee this past season.

Green Bay successfully added receivers through the NFL draft, but the Packers hit on most of their players.

Cobb (second round in 2011), Nelson (second round in 2008), Jones (third round in 2007) and Jennings (second round in 2006) were all high picks who eventually had an impact, but the Packers seemingly address their needs in other rounds and drafts.

"Look at New Orleans," Mayhew said. "Look at the guys they got in New Orleans when they really were humming down there. All those guys were guys that they drafted and they brought it. They have a good quarterback (Drew Brees), they put weapons out there for their quarterback, so the way I look at it is when you have a quarterback like Matthew Stafford, you want to keep giving him weapons, and that's what we're going to try to keep doing.

"If it's a receiver, if it's a tight end, if it's a running back that can catch passes out of the backfield, all those things help Matthew to be better, and they help Calvin (Johnson) to be better. That's something we're constantly focused on, how can we help those guys make more plays, and I'm not going to stop being focused on that."

I thought the same thing when I initially saw that play, but as a safety you should be taking that angle since it is the cb's job to set the boundary. If you are playing fast that's the angle you take, if you can diagnose him being blocked inside then yes you head to the sideline. Not on Delmas, but damn booger respect, watching games in that detail.

I read this, basically he admits he can't draft for shit. He brings up Randall Cobb? You could have drafted him you moron!

Check out Logans stats in 2010 (4th and 6th in KR and PR average) and we just got Burleson one year earlier who plays the same position and was younger and still had 2 years left without a huge cap number, 2011 and 2012. Big reason we didn't take Cobb because the Lions needed a burner at WR. Young is more of a burner than Cobb. And also Mayhew had Young as BPA. Or he drafted for need of a speed WR over slot WR and had Young rated ahead of Smith.

But in hindsight you take Torrey Smith.

Levy was charged for that TD though Delmas angle was bad. Levy took a worse angle and was extremely slow. Delmas played solid but that was probably his worst play of the year when he actually played. His second worse he gave up a 30 yarder to Andre Johnson. The TD by the Falcons on the screen was just great execution where the guard got to the second level and cut Delmas

stop trying to draft gems....you cant do it. Go sign Wallace away from PIT and poof...the WR position is done and you can stop writing articles about how you love to draft guys that dont do anything in the league.
