Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew believes acquiring receivers to help quarterback Matthew Stafford is the best way to build a team.
AP File Photo ALLEN PARK -- Few people know what Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew loves to have for breakfast, but everyone knows which position he loves the most.
Mayhew loves to acquire receivers, whether it is through the NFL draft or free agency. He is constantly compared to previous Lions general manager Matt Millen, who still has receivers Charles Rogers, Roy Williams and Mike Williams on his resume.
When Mayhew took over late in 2008, he picked up where Millen left off. He drafted Derrick Williams (third round), Tim Toone (seventh round), Titus Young (second round) and Ryan Broyles (second round) in four drafts. Mayhew also traded for Mike Thomas (2012) and signed free agents Bryant Johnson (2009) and Nate Burleson (2010).
Detroit recently signed 12 players to futures contract, and six of those athletes were receivers.
Mayhew may love receivers more than most NFL general managers, but refuses to shy away from acquiring athletes at that position heading into the 2013 season.
"I'll keep loving them. I got to pick them better." - Martin Mayhew"I tell you what. If those guys play and do well, then nobody complains about you drafting them," Mayhew said. "You look at Green Bay, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Greg Jennings, all those guys; Randall Cobb. All those guys were draft choices, and they're all doing very well. I'll keep loving them. I got to pick them better."
So far, Mayhew's receivers have not had a major impact.
Burleson has been solid, but sustained a season-ending broken leg in 2012. Young was sent home three times last season for his insubordination, while Broyles tore his ACL in college and re-injured his other knee this past season.
Green Bay successfully added receivers through the NFL draft, but the Packers hit on most of their players.
Cobb (second round in 2011), Nelson (second round in 2008), Jones (third round in 2007) and Jennings (second round in 2006) were all high picks who eventually had an impact, but the Packers seemingly address their needs in other rounds and drafts.
"Look at New Orleans," Mayhew said. "Look at the guys they got in New Orleans when they really were humming down there. All those guys were guys that they drafted and they brought it. They have a good quarterback (Drew Brees), they put weapons out there for their quarterback, so the way I look at it is when you have a quarterback like Matthew Stafford, you want to keep giving him weapons, and that's what we're going to try to keep doing.
"If it's a receiver, if it's a tight end, if it's a running back that can catch passes out of the backfield, all those things help Matthew to be better, and they help Calvin (Johnson) to be better. That's something we're constantly focused on, how can we help those guys make more plays, and I'm not going to stop being focused on that."
