Michigan vs Bama Game Thread

I grew up with them.

Me, Jim and John.

I don?t care about helmet stickers.

Say, isn?t there supposed to be some outdoor hockey on somewhere today?

Maize pants old man!

If I'm a UM fan, I'd find the loss today pretty disheartening. Mainly because unlike last year it appeared UM was plenty motivated (and though I wouldn't say Bama looked unmotivated there was less at stake than normal for them). And it didn't look like Michigan couldn't match up. That's happened on occasion when the Big Ten matches up with some of the top SEC (or other southern) teams where you see the athleticism and think "whoa, this is going to be a problem". And that wasn't the case today. But, Bama went in, made their adjustments and then just out-executed UM in the second half. And obviously that's a continuation of a trend with Harbaugh in big games.

Overall though looking at this game and how Minnesota played against Auburn, the Big Ten at least right now seems like they're hanging pretty good athletically now from a lot more places in the conference. That OSU team this year was perhaps the most athletic Big Ten team across the board I've ever seen.

That's what's disheartening to me. Michigan could have won this game. I won't go as far as to say that they should have, but they could have with a little better execution. They left a ton of points out there by missing wide open receivers, especially in the first half. There were drops, there were stupid penalties, there were missed throws. So it's disheartening because although there is certainly a bit of a talent gap it wasn't the chasm we all thought. The talent gap in the starters is marginal. It's really a difference in depth because Michigan doesn't have a second 5 star in waiting at every position and Bama does. But this is the healthiest they've been at the end of the season in recent years and they still couldn't find a way to win.

Michigan was going blow for blow and actually looked like the better team at halftime. But you're not going to win games against an Alabama, Clemson, OSU or LSU when you miss every single opportunity you have to make impact plays. OSU found out in their game that when you settle for field goals 75% of the time you get to the red zone that your margin for error is gone and all it takes is a couple of big plays to lose the game. And that's exactly what happened. If Shea doesn't miss Eubanks in the endzone it's 14-7. If he doesn't miss Collins on the third play of the game it's 21-7. If he doesn't miss on just a couple of the 10 balls he overthrew it's tied at 28 with 6 minutes left instead of a 12 point hole and you are in an entirely different situation and don't feel like you have to force the ball down field because you need a quick score.

I don't know what the answer is. Other than we need the Harbaugh from year 1 that's have 4 hour spring practices and "going into a submarine" for fall camp. We need him to be the crazy competitive guy who out works everyone else and gets more out of his team than he should. He's done that before, now he needs to do it again. Instead they'll go to Rome and travel the world and wear Jordan and have the coolest facilities and now they're right back to the country club that Hoke players were complaining about when he left.

They also need to get back to being a true meritocracy and not playing guys because they feel obligated to do so. I get that Shea might have been the best QB on the team in practice, but there were times this year where it was clear that he wasn't the answer and they kept putting him out there. I know that McCaffery was getting his shot at Wisconsin before the cheap shot knocked him out, but I don't recall ever hearing that it was truly a change and not following through on his off season talk about giving each guy some time because they were both good.

I think I just talked myself into being ready to move on from Jim. I want him to be the answer but it's getting worse, not better. If McCaffery/Milton/McNamara aren't the answer then I'm ready for a change.

Well, we don't write the checks or make any decisions in that process. We're just anonymous posters on the dsf.

Yep. I really hope that the patience with Jim pays off, just not feeling very confident that it will. There are certainly benefits to him, the stability and the fact that the program has been a shining example of how to run a clean house. It is also nice to be back to winning the games they're supposed to win and order has been restored with MSU. So Jim has restored the program to where it was when Lloyd left, it's just not gotten to the point where most of us expected it to be which is competing for conference titles and being competitive with OSU.

I will concede that this is easily the least talented defense he's had. The depth on the DL and at corner is lacking badly so it's not necessarily surprising that they lost to 4 top 15 teams away from home. And road games against those types of teams are tough so it's not like they are the only program that's struggled to win them in the past 12 years. It's just that the top tier programs that they are trying to compete with typically win their share and even under Jim they haven't been able to close a few close games that they had a chance to win. Yesterday, Penn State this year, 2016 at OSU are a few that come to mind.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I have come to the conclusion that this is what we're going to get from Jim. He's Kirk Ferentz. He's going to have above average teams most of the time and occasionally he's going to have a really good team that will get waxed when they get to a bowl game against a truly elite team.

Theres a lot of words here that can be easily summed up....Shea played a very poor game. Zero accuracy on anything over 5 yards. You have a good qb playing for us that game and we win it handedly and are probably up 14-21 points by halftime. Way too many missed opportunities.

win it "handily"? When I think of a team "winning it handily" I think of at least a 2 TD win. That's a 33 point swing.

As well as the poor offense in the second half, the defense had similar struggles to the ones they had in the OSU game. Couldn't get to the QB and the time they did they hit him too hard resulting in a penalty and eventual TD. The Bama receivers were fast, but most passes that extended their possessions were to receivers that were wide open. If you can't get to the QB and you can't cover the receivers you are not going to win the game. I've lost faith in Don Brown.

2 TDs instead of FGs in the first half....24-14. Then he proceeded to overthrow 8 WRs over 15 yards. Can a good QB connect on half of those? You keep drives going and all of a sudden your run game that was dominant in the first half gets to show up. Ya...theres were plays left out there to win handedly vs Alabama. We completely outplayed them in the first half. They didnt completely outplay us in the 2nd half...we just had a shitty QB that pissed the game away.

One thing we can do, though............get rid of those dumb fucking all white uniforms. They fucking suck plain and simple. It doesn't even look like Michigan is on the fucking field. They are garbage and need to go. Burn them!!!!

On the third page of this thread I posted that they would lose because of wearing those awful white unis.

It feels like they lose most of the time in them. And it always seems like we are the away team in these bowl games. Florida last year was the only year in Harbaugh era we wore home uni's.
