It's weird but I'm not all upset about it. Maybe it's the comment he made about "I'll come back when I'm ready (fans don't appreciate me) or the fact we seem to play better without him.

It definitely struck me odd also. He's had pretty much universal acceptance despite some very public mishaps.

Despite his amazing career to this point he's yet another vet that really drives home a need to limit the length of these contracts even if it means giving up a year or so of team control.

In an uncapped league this causes a real issue Everytime these guys come up for FA (especially a Boras client) and you have the Yanks/Dodgers forcing your hand.

Real or Not? Miggy might never dominate at the plate again.

Once one of the iron men of the game, Cabrera averaged 157 games per season from 2004 to 2014 without landing on the DL. But check out his list of injuries since 2014:

2014: Played 159 games and hit .313 with 25 home runs but had surgery after the season to repair a stress fracture in his foot and bone spurs in his ankle.

2015: Landed on the DL for the first time, missing six weeks because of a calf strain and playing only 119 games (he still hit .338 to win his fourth batting title, although he hit only 18 home runs).

2017: Bothered by back problems all season and played 130 games, hitting .249 with 16 home runs.

2018: Missed time earlier because of a hamstring issue and now he's out for the season. While he managed to hit .301 while in the lineup, he never did find his power stroke.

Cabrera is now 35 years old -- turning 36 next April -- with a body struggling to handle the rigors of playing baseball every day. There is still ability there when healthy, as witnessed by a strong 2016 season when he hit .316 with 38 home runs, but will he be able to tap into that ability in the future? The worrisome aspect for the Tigers? Cabrera's future salaries: $30 million per season in 2019, 2020 and 2021, then $32 million per year in 2022 and 2023... and then a $30 million vesting option (or an $8 million buyout) for 2024, and a $30 million vesting option for 2025.

That's a minimum of $162 million owed an aging superstar who probably moves to DH next season. Look, maybe Cabrera bounces back and this won't end up as bad as the Albert Pujols contract. Miggy is a better hitter than Pujols, who turned into a one-dimensional slugger in his mid-30s, with declining batting averages and worsening control of the strike zone. Cabrera still had a .397 OBP, so there's some hope he'll age better if the body does.

Still, when Cabrera signed the extension back in March 2014 -- when he still had two seasons remaining on his contract at the time -- it was obviously a risky bet given the deal would, at minimum, go through Cabrera's age-40 season. The contract was widely criticized in part because there was no need to do the contract when he was still two years away from free agency. If the Tigers had waited even one year, they would have witnessed the first signs of Cabrera's body breaking down.

That extension came courtesy of an owner now deceased and a GM no longer here. The current regime has to work with the ramifications.

The move to DH will be huge for miggy I hope.

It's a shame they didn't just cut bait on V Mart and eat the deal and start the DH a year earlier. Although still likely he gets injured anyway

bad news for Miggy and the Tigers...but the article is spot on.

Shame his body is breaking down . But like has been metntioned I hope in the future the Tigers will not hand out these long guaranteed contracts. Dang shame . Although I feel he gets away with a ton off the field I hate seeing his career end up like this.

I so agree with you on the contracts. We have had some really bad ones in recent years!

Detroit should've taken notes on how St Louis handled Pujols at age 31.

True. They still finish above .500 every year. Even Boston didn't go overboard an JD. I think teams are figuring out those long deals are not good.

Hopefully we have no more.

I said this on the old espn Forum. And somewhere on this Forum, Tigers will not win a WS with Cabrera at first. I'm afraid I can rest my case now. As he probably will DH from now on. Although he has done a good job at 1st.
Still when the trade was made for Cabrera, Tigers had a 3rd baseman and two 1stbaseman type players and more guys that needed to play DH. than roster spaces. And really that got them on the wrong path, and off what ever plan they had!
I'll say it again Inge should have included in the Cabrera trade. And really shows how bad Tiger management has been, and they never learn.
Really it shows that the talent on the field carries them more often than the thinking. Al Kaline once said improve the management and the team will get better. Well the current management is not responsible for most of the problems that now plague the Tigers. But it will be hard to change the course of the ship with the damage all ready done. Yep long term contracts can compound the problems. Al Al needs to get a plan and stick to it.

yup...I called it when they signed him 2 years too early.

2 years early I didn't quite understand that. As far not winning a WS with Miggy we got there in 2012 so it almost happened. That was before the huge deal, and the Sanchez deal, and Zimmerman & Fielder.

"Still when the trade was made for Cabrera, Tigers had a 3rd baseman and two 1stbaseman type players.."

Detroit could have had a team full of 1B and the Miggy trade was so worth it.

Not upset either but sad rather, just hate to see him go down like this. And can?t shake the feeling he could end up opting for the Calvin route due to Toll on his body over the years or if he?s unable to come back 100% and satisfied that he can still preform at the level he wants to.

Calvin, I believe 1 year left on contract. Miggy, lots of years left. For players it's still largely about money. Can't imagine he gives up all that..

This is a sad time for our Tigers and all of us fans. Whether we like/agree with Miggy's extended contract or not, all I can think of, and can't remember is if
I read anything why Mike Ilitch gave him the extra years. What I think is that Mr. I wanted Miggy to spend the rest of his career as a Tiger.
Right or wrong, I can't help but feel this was his plan.

Miggy has played like a beast when healthy, and even when hurt when he won his last batting title and the quality numbers that year 2016.
As we have witnessed him playing hurt, especially with herniated disc, which has sapped him of some power.
The injuries to his groin, hamstring, shoulder, ankle, core, last two mentioned with subsequent surgeries he played hurt with still good numbers. Last year, the back did him in, as he could only put his upper body into his swing, worst year of his career. But this injury, with a completely torn/ruptured bicep tendon he would be swinging one handed.

I/We can only hope the surgery and rehab, and all the rest he has for his back will give him ample time to completely heal and come back as near to as he once was.

You know, watching Kaline play his whole career, Al was always getting hurt for 2/3 weeks, plus, up to that 1962 year when he missed 62 games with the broken collarbone. That was Al's only weakness his career, unable to stay healthy.
His final few years offensively were not what he put up earlier and those great years as I pointed out, out the weeks and months was what cost him those 30 home run years, and a few more 100 rbi and 100 runs scored seasons.
But Al never had these Miggy type of injuries that required surgeries.

This sucks, even as the ownership of the team has sent star players packing, and are in a rebuild left with a few good players, and the rest AAAA players doing the shuttle from Toledo to Detroit, the fan in me/us still hoping they win more games than is expected of them.

Missing a player of Miggy's stature bums me out, where even when they are getting beat, I/We could still look forward to Miggy's move up the statistical rankings chain for Tigers and MLB. Now that is on hold until next year.

Dr. David Altchek will perform Miguel Cabrera's surgery tomorrow in New York.

Afterwards, Cabrera will rehab in Detroit, not his winter home in Florida. Head athletic trainer Doug Teter said that was joint decision between Miggy and Tigers.

Miguel Cabrera will have surgery Thursday. Doctors expect him to be lifting weights in four months.
Tigers will not move Castellanos -- will go with Hicks, Goodrum, and Ronny Rodriguez, for now.

The Tigers today placed 1B Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list with a ruptured left biceps tendon. In a corresponding move, the Tigers have recalled INF Ronny Rodriguez from Triple A Toledo.
