The Ilitches are on their way to their 23rd losing season in the 31 years they?ve been owners. Lost over 100 games 4 times. Lost over 90 games 12 times.
They have not had a winning season since 2016(86-77) they?ve finished over 20 games behind 1st place over 15 times. SELL CHRIS!!!

The Tigers are the only team in baseball that is winless in the month of June.
In fact?
This is the first time in 122 seasons of Detroit Tigers Baseball that the team has started 0-9 in the month of June.

You have the draft..primary pitching pieces returning from injury..and Riley Greene all in the next 6 weeks..then the trade deadline and hopefully the release of Colt Keith from exile and see what Meadows and Malloy can learn ..its the best Harris can hope for from 2023..

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

The Detroit Tigers have been on a roller coaster this year. A bad April followed by the month of May in which they won 5 more games than they lost. For awhile, they sat in 2nd place just a couple games out of first. For the record, the AL Central leader is sitting at .500 (through Tuesday?s games).

In June, they lost 9 in row before winning Monday night?s game in the bottom of the 9th. They now sit in 4th place, 10 games under .500.

Over the winter, Scott Harris was hired to oversee the resurrection of the team. In turn, he hired a significant number of new people to oversee coaching, training, scouting, drafting and development. The process of rebuilding this organization is expected to realistically take at least a couple years.

At what level of performance were you expecting this year?

Did you think that the Tigers would show some small improvement this year?

Or did you believe that the new team would initiate some level of tearing down in order to create a clean slate?

Or did you believe that the PoBO would have inspired a much bigger step forward?

How do you feel about the year so far?

How do you feel about the Tigers' 2023 season so far?

1. Happy to see some progress/promise.

2. It's what I expected to see.

3. I'm disappointed in what I see.

WOULD YOU RATHER??..?

On this long holiday weekend, let?s have some fun with a challenging choice you have to make.

Two options. One choice.

Both options have benefits and drawbacks.

Ready?

Would you return to the strategy of Mike Ilitch and fill your team with high-priced free agents if you were guaranteed that the Tigers would play October baseball in just 2 years? But also knowing that at some point, some of these free agents would become albatrosses and that another tear down/rebuild would be necessary?

Or would you opt to build a mostly home-grown roster of younger, controllable players who would be part of the organization for a number of years going forward? The only catch is that in order to play October baseball, it would take 4 years. Twice as long as the team filled with free agents.
Which would you choose?

Which method would you choose in order for the Tigers to reach the playoffs?

1. Mr. I's strategy of loading the team with free agents similar to the 2012 team..

2. Developing primarily a home-grown team similar to the 1984 team.

It shouldn't take 4 years to build a playoff team. But even if it does, it's the preferred solution, if the process is repeated and refined over time. It's not a building process; it's a process that sustains success.

By the end of this season, the Detroit Tigers will be shedding at least 1 significant contract ? Miguel Cabrera?s. It is also expected that Eduardo Rodriguez will be changing teams this year.

The Tigers have many holes to fill for the 2024 season and it is expected that they will be making a bigger investment in player salaries.

But how much should they spend?

There are 2 ways of looking at payroll ? the pattern seen in MLB overall and the payrolls of the AL Central. Let?s look at both.

Considering that payrolls fluctuate over the course of a year, we?ll look at the 2022 figures, considering that the final totals aren?t yet in for 2023.

The average payroll of MLB teams was $150 mill in 2022.

Out of the top 10 payrolls, 2 of those teams, the Red Sox ($212 mill) and the White Sox ($203 mill) did not make the playoffs.

Here?s who did with their corresponding payrolls:

AL

Cleveland $66 mill

Houston $182 mill

NY Yankees $252 mill

Seattle $116 mill

Tampa Bay $98 mill

Toronto $177 mill

NL

Atlanta $183 mill

LA $265 mill

NY Mets $268 mill

Philadelphia $242 mill

St. Louis $156 mill

San Diego $224 mill

Now, let?s look at the AL Central:

White Sox $203 mill

Twins $149 mill

Tigers $136 mill

Royals $93 mill

Guardians $66 mill

This year, the Tigers are currently sitting at $125 mill in payroll. A slight decrease from last year due to the DFA?ing of 16+ players. This year?s payroll could continue to go up or down depending upon trades, bonuses and incentives written into contracts.

From approximately 2006 through 2017, the Tigers routinely ranked #2 to #4 in MLB payrolls under Dave Dombrowski. And this year, the NY Mets? payroll currently sits at $363 mill with them 6 games under .500 and 18.5 games out of first place. From both of these experiences, we know that the largest payrolls are no guarantee of success in October ? or even during the season.

The Tigers now have a new Front Office and a new way of doing business. For the first time in decades, they are putting a focus on developing home grown talent. They are moving away from Mike Ilitch?s strategy of buying a team.

So how much should the Tigers? payroll be for the 2024 season given all of the information posted above?

Are they ready to spend a lot more given Cabrera?s retirement?

Or do they need to go more slowly given that the team is nowhere close to being in contention next year? Should they strategically add some solid talent next year and then build up from there going forward?

Is it necessary for them to be one of the top spenders when the rest of the AL Central isn?t spending much more?
What should they spend?

What should the Tigers spend on payroll for the 2024 season?

1. $225+ million

2. $200 - $225 mill

3. $175 - $200 mill

4. $150 - $175 mill

5. $125 - $150 mill

6. $100 - $125 mill

7. $100 mill or less

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.

The grass always looks greener on the other side, especially when it comes to MLB?s owners. And a number of them have been in the news recently ? and not for good reasons.

Believe it or not, there are actually official rankings for baseball owners. Multiple lists.

The biggest surprise may be that Tigers owner (officially it?s the entire family), Chris Ilitch is neither at the top or the bottom of those lists. He is still described as a ?work in progress?, having taken over for his father who left the team in significant financial disarray and over a decade of operating in the red.

Chris is getting high marks for the latest hires and green-lighting a rebuilding that will finally modernize the Tigers. Next year?s rankings will tell us much more about how intent he is on building a sustainable team.

But for those of you with unwavering highly-negative opinions about Ilitch, be careful what you wish for! Roughly one-third of the other MLB owners have inspired significantly more dislike from their fans ? and even from those who work for them.

Ready for some train wrecks? Here are the top 5 most infamous and bad owners in MLB. Grab your popcorn?..

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Many of the discussions this year in baseball have been about the AL Central. In particular, how it is MLB?s worst division and filled with failure and ineptitude according to a recent national article. In past years, it?s always been known as baseball?s weakest division.

The best team this year is only 5 games above .500. The rest have more losses than wins with the team in second place 7 games under .500.

As a Tigers fan, is this division a blessing or a curse?

Is the division title easier to get or is it simply a recognition that doesn?t mean much outside of the Central?

Does the mediocrity and payrolls of the other teams influence what the Tigers do?

Do the other 4 teams inspire the Tigers to build a roster that will perform at the top of MLB or simply give ownership the excuse to do only as much as needed?

What do you think?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
