Last Friday, owner Chris Ilitch was asked during a Red Wings press conference about his thoughts regarding the Detroit Tigers.
Chris responded ?I?m very pleased with the progress at the Detroit Tigers?.There?s actually some good progress happening with some of the young guys that have come up and developed, and so on and so forth.?

At the time he said it, the Tigers were the third-worst team in MLB and just 1 game out of last place in the AL Central. Overall, the Tigers were expected to do better this year and both Ilitch and Avila talked about the potential for reaching the playoffs.

As a fan, hearing Ilitch?s statement, how did it make you feel?

2017 https://baseball-reference.com/teams/DET/2017.shtml

Is the team better..for tanking every single year after this..the 2022 payroll is higher than 2018..

What business savvy owner..what stupid fucking owner..would be this ignorant to not spot incompetence..BTW the scouting director..is the same guy also..better future managed well..2017..2022..what an absolute mess.

Over / under. How many players on the current 26 man roster of the Tigers can Chris Ilitch name?

Illich holdings employs tens of thousands of people. Tigers players are just employees...highly paid and some pretty famous, but still just 26 out of thousands of employees.

Anyway, this team makes so many roster moves, my guess is 20 which would be pretty respectable number IMO.

I doubt I could name 20

Tigers are a small business compared to all other Illich Holding ventures. People and money.

The All-Star Game takes place this coming Tuesday and it also serves as the official marker that half of the baseball season will be completed.

This is a good time for us to reflect on the first 3.5 months of the 2022 season. We?re no longer at a point where we?ve only had a taste of what the Tigers are capable of doing. We now have a very good idea of their capabilities.

This is a good time for us to put this year into context as it pertains to the Tigers? rebuild.

Last year, the Tigers finished in 3rd place in the AL Central ? not too far away from .500. This year, they are .5 games out of last place (through Thursday?s games) and with a .411 win/loss percentage. There are 5 teams in MLB with worse records.

This year, both Chris Ilitch and Al Avila said that the ?rebuild is over.? Both quoted that it was now time for this team to move forward. No more tearing down.

However, the team is on a pace to lose 90-100 games again. Last year was their best one in many years with ?only? 85 losses.

In the off-season, the Tigers spent $243 million just on free agents. They added 4 new pitchers and have called up many pitching prospects. Also new are 3 infielders and 2 outfielders.

They have seen a number of young pitching prospects come up and also the debuts of Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene. No other non-pitching prospects are expected to come up this year for more than a couple games.

Granted, they have lost many players due to injuries and 1 very weird circumstance. Their original starting rotation was decimated where only 1-2 still remain active.

Their bullpen is ranked #3 in MLB but the Tigers rank last in almost every major offensive category. They are about to set a historic club record in plating the least number of runs since 1901.

Officially, the Tigers started rebuilding in earnest back in 2017. They are currently on year #6 of rebuilding.

Given all of this information, how well do you believe this rebuild is going?

Is the slide backward this year part of what happens in a rebuild?

Are the weaker results mostly due to all of the injuries?

Or is the strategy used to rebuild this team faulty?

How well do you believe the Tigers' rebuild is going?

1. Very well.

2. As expected. Typical of rebuilds.

3. Poor results are due to injuries.

4. Very badly.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic:

The Detroit Tigers are having a worse season than last year and are flirting with returning to another 100 loss season after finishing in third place with a .475 WL% in 2021. All of this despite both Chris Ilitch and Al Avila saying the ?rebuild is over.?

Ilitch spent over $243 million on free agents alone this year, none of whom have much of an impact. And over half of the roster is underperforming.
The team is on a pace to set a historical Tigers record ? as well as MLB ? for fewest runs ever scored.

But the Tigers have been saddled with many injuries this year, especially to the starting rotation which lost all but one of their Opening Day pitchers.

This year also saw the emergence of some highly-touted rookies acquired from the years of tanking. All but one are either injured or have been sent back to Toledo.

From what you see this year, what do you think of the Tigers? current rebuild?

Is it going as you expected with a slight detour?

Has the progress been derailed for the year due to situations beyond their control, such as injuries?
Or is this a sign that the rebuild is not working as planned?
What do you think?

What do you think about the Tigers' rebuild?

1. Results mostly due to circumstances beyond their control.

2. Results mostly due to failed strategy and moves.

So today, here is my top 5 list of the most recent biggest changes and growing problems the Tigers have to address as soon as possible. They are so large that they have reached the point of no return and the team must ensure that they are resolved before next season.

1. RETURN TO THE BARGAIN BASEMENT BIN.

2. UNACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND CONDITIONING.

3. FANS REVOLTING.

4. POOR MLB REPUTATION.

5. NATIONAL MEDIA.
