Chechnya??? WTF? Sure there are the Islamic ties, but those particular bastards aim their activities against Russia, not the US. Maybe they were recruited by AQ or some other group, but it seems like any group they might be associated with would have already tried to lay claim.

I'm guessing they were trained by an AQ type group but broke off on their own. Still, it would be nice to think we would have never allowed them into the US. Seems highly likely they were recruited before even coming to the US, I just cannot comprehend how they got in. Maybe on a student visa??? Their ages imply that might be a possibility, but I would have hoped the US was doing more thorough screening of guys fitting this type of description.

shouldn't be. there are many caucasian muslims in the US who are citizens. some converted, some have family who came over a generation or more ago. look at the so-called American Taliban asshole.

it has never been an issue of race, always been an issue with Religious Extremism. that often includes Domestic Terrorists of any religion. the problem is when things are taken to extremes, it results in an inability to rationalize and come to any type of common ground resolution. everything is black&white, no other color...except blood red.

the frustrating thing will be if people come to the conclusion that because they were doing this here, and not in Russia... we all need to give up more constitutional rights, life in a police state, etc. really though, people should be looking at authorities and saying, "Okay, we tolerated the Patriot Act, the Iraq War, a 12 year invasion and occupation of afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, near omnipresent public surveillance, unrestrained domestic wiretapping and asinine airport security procedures... all of which was supposed to keep us safe, yet this is still happening. apparently the FBI was able to narrow it down to the two subjects because of this guy.

the suspect looked at him, then put the bomb at his feet and walked away. he lost both legs in the explosion.

oh it will be interesting to see who is going to take the fall for this. how were they allowed into the US in the first place? is there a mole (or multiple) working for Immigration who has been knowingly and purposefully letting guys like this in? or too lazy or uncaring to do a thorough enough background check on guys like this?

it could also be that these guys simply outsmarted the brilliant minds doing that type of work.

another left unanswered question is whether they were students or not, and if so, students where? at MIT??? that will be a bit troublesome to think about, IMO. let's say they would have graduated, what type of access would they have had to very important elements of American Infrastructure.

seems doubtful someone working that angle would have been the type to perform the boston bombings, but maybe they were failing their classes, so this was their fall back plan.

it will be interesting to learn all the backstory, particularly why the US government failed to keep these guys out of the country and didn't monitor their actions enough to prevent this. that is where you will find the government looking to increase their surveillance capabilities, Champ. the government will claim they need to do even greater levels of unrestrained surveillance in order to prevent this type of event, and how many will buy into that?

No disrespect intended, so no need to fly off the handle at me, but there is actually quite a number of things that I am certainly willing to give up to maintain/improve the safety of my family. That will always be first, before any civil liberties. I would have to seriously consider supporting anything the government might do to achieve this. There is no carte blanche, of course, but there are quite a few things I would support.

I realize it may be frustrating to you, but how would you feel if there was something that could have been done to keep your new spouse safe, but due to inaction, something happened to them?

I don't know how the government could possibly increase surveillance beyond what they're already doing... reading every email, text, or listening into any phone call they want for any reason.

you guys don't remember this, or this. or if you do, you probably didn't care because Bush was president and you reflexively defended everything he did. Obama didn't stop any of this, if anything, surveillance has only increased, and indeed he voted for the act in the second link.

these are easy as pie to get, and you'd be surprised to learn you can get them and keep them for literally the flimsiest excuse for college as possible. right around chicago there are lots of DeVry-like "computer technical schools" that offer the most bullshit excuses for higher-education you've ever heard. They are run for-profit, and for a couple grand a semester, a person can maintain a student visa here in the U.S.

no more surveillance needed... if anything, tighter visa standards... which would require more spending and oversight. Heavens no! Big government at work! And this wouldn't even be the big government GOP mouth-breathers like (guns, tanks and bombers) it's the clerical stuff... more inspectors, more paperwork, more background checks. because really, as high-profile and shocking as incidents like this are, you're still a lot more likely to be killed in any number of ways... terrorism is incredibly low on the threat scale. no need to give up more rights... just enforce the laws already on the books better.

seemed pretty devout, but not exactly extreme. seems like a douche too.

maybe these guys were sleeper agents sent by al qaeda as some are alleging? doesn't seem to make sense to fund their living expenses, tuition & fees, and the like for over two years (which is easily $100,000 or more total) for just a couple of homemade bombs at a marathon.

my guess is they had some other issues... too much credit card debt, or frustration at finding the going tougher than they were lead to believe, and decided to go out violently. a strict interpretation of Islam just provided a more righteous justification to turning to bombing and robbing 7-11s or whatever they did.
