MLB 2012 Draft June 4

Tigers 7th round pick is Florida RHP Hudson Randall.

Hudson Randall (RHP) - FB 88-90, touches 92, good sink, can move ball around, three secs, short on stuff, competes hard.
Mark

Randall's got the ceiling of a back-end-of-rotation guy. Low velo, but "pitchability." Right-handed Adam Wilk sort of.

RHP Hudson Randall from UF. 6'3" 180 throws strikes, induces lots of groundballs. FB 88-92 CH CV SL.

and we drafted another right-handed power arm out of high school, Jake Thompson from Texas. I know that with the baseball draft you never draft for need and only draft talent, but still...do we REALLY need another righty power arm in our system?

Eh, we really don't have many good right-handed power arms in our system.

Other than Turner, I don't see anyone that I would expect to be a quality big league starter.

Our system pretty much needs everything.

Tigers draft Texas State left fielder Jeff McVaney in the 8th round. (6-2, 210).

and selected Stanford CF Jake Stewart in the 9th round.
Jake Stewart (OF) - Really good defender, can go get it, plus arm, good athlete, bat needs to develop, raw stick.
Mark Anderson.

later part of the first 10 rounds has been almost entire signability. More talent likely to go in rounds 11-15 then rounds 7-10.

why are they going now? Because any guy you sign for less than allotted now gives you money to use elsewhere in draft.

Remember if you save $400,000 on 7-10th rounders you sign, you can spend that on earlier or later picks.

Any pick after the 10th who signs for more than $100K counts against bonus pool. It's not that teams can't pay more than 100K.

next....
Bennett Pickar (C) - Outstanding defender, plus arm, built for catching, long swing, can't hit.

Felix (RHP) - Smallish RHP, plus arm speed, FB sits 91-92 and has reached 95, lacks control, needs some work.

Hunter Scantling (RHP) - Absolutely huge (6-8, 240), relief profile, average FB, could try to coax more out of him.

Jordan Dean (SS) - Smallish middle infielder that is a solid glove, can hit to all fields, grinder type, Shawn Roof mold.

Tigers Draft Review Day 2.
from mcbtb

As much as I would like to get on my high horse, and derail the Tigers scouting department for a poor job so far, I?m not really sure they could do much considering the low draft budget the new CBA left them with.
Prince Fielder in effect is their draft. However, I am not going to let them off the hook completely, because this isn?t a good draft despite the relative weakness of the draft in 2012.

It seems as if the Tigers organization has punted the draft for two years straight now, and in the long run, I don?t think that is a good strategy.
The development and scouting staff needs work, and we may see that now that the Tigers can?t vastly overpay for talent that falls into their lap.

Again, how can anyone say whether its a good draft or not this early? I've seen drafts where others raved and they ended up bad so its way to early. 3 years from now and we just might be rollin' with these guys.

Drafted Player comments from Tigers minor league guru Mark Anderson;

Josh Turley (LHP) - FB 87-89, plus to plus-plus CH, CT and CB are workable, can flat out pitch.

Slade Smith (RHP) - FB 89-91 w/ plus sink, SL isn't tight and needs work, durable guy, lacks upside.

Dylan LaVelle (3B) - Potential to hit for average and power, plus arm at third, Oregon State commit that could cost.

Will Clinard (RHP) - Big, physical kid, relief profile, FB 90-92, 55 SL w/ horizontal movement.

Logan Ehlers (LHP) - Nice lefty w/ 55 FB w/ three-pitch mix, over slot guy, highlighted as one of best avail. at BPN.

Alex Phillips (LHP) - Big lefty reliever, durable, may get more Velocity out of him w/ work.

DJ Driggers (OF) - Good body, has strength, power potential, tons of swing and miss.

Drew Harrison (RHP) - Big guy, fresh, untested arm, shows average FB, kind of a blank canvas.

Nick Carmichael (RHP) - Huge, 6-6, 220, reliever profile, he's a project that they'll tinker with.

Jared Reaves (SS) - Can play all over, smallish, contact hitter, works counts, "pesky" according to one scout.

Rashad Brown (OF) - Burner w/ CF profile, good athlete, needs to figure out how to hit and add strength.

Miguel Paulino (OF) - Live, athletic body, not a burner, but can run some, gap power, still raw.

Josh Carr (RHP) - Friday starter, good size, flashes decent stuff, slim chance to coax more out.

Zach Kirksey (OF) - Slugger type, thick body, poor defender, LF only, lots of swing and miss.

Preston Jamison (LHP) - Another big boy, 6-6, 220, FB up to 88, bit of a project.

Connor Harrell (OF) - Plus runner, very good size, CF profile w/ pop in bat, tons and tons of swing and miss.

Blake McFadden(RHP) - Projectable righty that needs to firm body, FB up to 90 now w/ projection for more, needs college.

Tyler Hanover (2B) - Experienced guy, very small, plays hard, grinder, filling a short-season roster.

Jacob Kapstein (C) - Really strong arm, solid athleticism, moves well, surprising wheels for backstop, bat must develop.

Clate Schmidt (RHP) - FB 88-96 and up to 97, Fringy CB, may have CH, committed to Clemson, tough sign, smaller guy.

Charlie Neil (C) - Switch hitter, announced as C, has arm strength, decent athlete, lacks offensive profile.

Alex Minter (LHP) - Knows how to pitch, A&M signee, good body but not ideal, struck 119 in 59.2 innings as senior.

John Sansone (SS) - Decent frame, good athlete, not a SS long term, good bloodlines, going to FSU.

Ryan Longstreth (LHP) - Local kid, nothing that stands out but he competes and mixes pitches well, solid low-level arm.

What do you think KC. I don't think this draft was very good. There were some decent late signings but they will probably opt for college instead. A friend of mind thinks I'm basing too much of my opinion on Baseball Americas rankings, which I am, but it doesn't seem very good at all. Be interested to see your opinion and maybe Reb's, TOJ and some others. Times like this it would be interesting to see what our favorite Twins fan has to say. I didn't look real close but on first glance MIN and CHW had good drafts

Hi Troy, well overall kind of underwhelmed. Just seem to draft too many players that lack high upside, Heard Chadd was talking it up during the game. I think the Tigers need better people in development. For Tigers players up and aged later 20's to be so fundamentally deficient in defense, like Boesch, what are they teaching them. At least be able field your position.

Yeah Chadd and I can't remember the guy from the Red Sox we got were supposed to be elite scouting and talent evaluators but I'm not so sure now. What do I know though, lol. I looked at some of the other AL picks and they might not be as good as I thought. MIN and CHW. I thought KCs first pick was really good but I didn't look at any other picks they made
