It was good last season, too, but not this good.

It was ok last year, but there were plenty of holes. I mean they let Gary Nova throw for 404 yards. Making Nova look like Elway isn't really a sign of a good defense.

This year is totally different. They are special. If we had a QB, this would be one hell of an amazing season.

Where does the fumbled punt return defense rank nationally?

When people talk about the difference between Spartans they meet in in real life and the anonymous ones online, you are a great representation of that difference.

From MGoBlog today

The Minnesota band entered the field before the game led by a donkey, and, ahem, ?the animal wore trousers of Michigan colors."

This is why I am so pissed at the D for the MSU game. They were extremely inconsistent and lacked energy, not to mention mentally unfocused with the untimely penalties that sustained MSU drives.

Call it being spoiled, having too high of expectations, whatever...they just did not have the intensity and nastiness they displayed in previous games. The fact they were not "up" for a game that was the biggest the group has played in...I just don't get it, still.

Maybe they let the 3 game shutout streak go to their heads. Maybe the coaches just didn't have a good game plan. Maybe the locker room had a cold bug that sapped their energy. Maybe they were just collectively off and had a bad game.

Whatever the reason, it was unfortunate. Hopefully they regroup and learn from it.

How do you know they weren't "up" for the game? They basically shut down the run. Cook is one of the best QBs in the league, and there's nothing much that can be done when he's putting the ball in perfect spots.

Outside of the 74 yard breakdown, the defense did everything they needed to win the game. Cook was under 50% and threw for about 250 outside of that huge play.

When we needed the D to step up on the biggest drive in the 4th, they did. The offense didn't get a first down to seal the game and then the fumbled punt happened.

calling bullshit on this, your defense did not lack energy. go back and re-watch it, it was a hard hitting game with a ton of intensity on both sides. if anything, your penalties were due to too much intensity, with Bolden diving onto Cook when he was already on the ground and henry deciding to do a belly flop after the whistle, that's not a lack of intensity. also, there were a few PI calls (not sure how many) but there was a ton of aggressive man to man coverage with a lot of hand fighting, some that should have been called on Lewis. The reason Cook threw for 328 against you is because he's really freaking good and he has an excellent group of receivers led by burbridge. You had a good pass rush and got to cook a few times but he rarely gets sacked, he has more this year due to OL injuries but he gets the ball out quickly and accurately, it's tough to stop that. You might want to give credit to your opponent on this one, MSU's passing yardage in that game was not a fluke. It could have been a lot worse if not for Kings dropping some big gains that hit him in the numbers.

Nah, that Bolden call was weak sauce, and all but maybe 3, 4 MSU fans see that. He was shoved in the back on top of Cook, and he barely touched him. It wasn't targeting by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not trying to take this too far off track since my comment was in reference to the defense being too aggressive vs not enough but i thought he shouldn't have been kicked out based the replay. I then watched this video (by a MSU writer) but he's a great football analyst and I agree with him.

For those who don't watch it, it basically says that bolden comes off moving a lot faster than conklins arm was moving and conklin was holding him with his right hand as well. he wasn't thrown into Cook and he was going for his head. The replay officials reviewed it and agreed

Anyway, M's defense is pretty good this season.

Agreed. Lewis played great against Burbridge. Burbridge caught the ball anyway. Can't blame the defense. You've got to give credit where credit is due.

It was more Connor Cook than anything. Hes making really tough passes even on the run and proving he is ne of the tops in the league. The last 3 games hes come back into last years form. Our run game did next to nothing.

He was the other part of it, Cook and Burbridge have been zoned in the last 3 games. I wish we had another "go to" reciever but we really dont. You saw how Kings blew 2 huge catches so he isn our guy in critical situations.
