MSU Football recruiting

WR Jaron Glover looking for a new school to drop passes at. He announced he’s entering the portal making him the first significant player to enter this offseason as far as I can tell.

Correction: Ken Talley who came to MSU via the portal last year (from psu) announced his intent to enter the portal yesterday.

Carter declares for the draft and KLA is out of eligibility. Hopefully Tucker can find his KW III this year - would be nice to have another TB so dominant he can single-handed win 3 or 4+ games and compete for the Heisman despite having a horrendous o-line. What a crime that was that he didn’t win it.

Freshman safety Jaylen Thompson entering the portal. Says he wants to be closer to family due to illness - no specifics given.

Jalen Smith, who just completed his redshirt freshman season becomes the 3rd WR to enter the transfer portal.

Leavitt takes a 3-9 turd and brings them a big 12 title and playoff birth.
Good for him - he's the QB I most wanted to stay but as has been pointed out, that wasn't going to happen. I doubt he'd be having anything close to that kind of success had he stayed in EL. He probably starts camp as QB2 and who knows if he would have won the job given Chiles came with Smith.

What I take from this is how bad this team is - our o-line in particualr. We're 110th in rushing yards per game, ASU is 23rd. Skattebo has 570 more rushing yards than Carter & KLA combined, he also has 500 yds receiving. Their top receiver has almost double the yards of Marsh and Leavitt got sacked half as much as Chiles. All that considered I'd be surprised if Leavitt got us more than 1 additional win.

ASU looks kinda like the IU of the Big 12 having made several significant upgrades. As bummed as I am about how bad this season turned out, I'm happy for Leavitt. If he stayed, it probably wouldn't have gotten any better for him and his was able to leave for a much better situation.

Nope, many of the turds from last year are starting for asu. Including Skattebo. The QB play is 100% to credit for their offense taking that giant leap. Smith is a 2X idiot for not recruiting him. Mr Saturday night fever Chiles is to blame for a lot of those sacks. Haven't seen a qb dance in the pocket too long like him since Denard at UM. Our 2 rbs averaged 4.6 yards per carry between them. Run game was not even close to the issue woth this team.

Also, if you believe the spartan beat reporters, Chiles is the reason for the wr exodus.

There’s no chance this is correct. Leavitt is part of the turn around but far from the only difference. They had 19 commits from HS and 30 transfers including a bunch of OL & DL players. ASU’s passing game ranks 71st in the country. Scattebo transferred in 1 year before and average 4.8 ypc. Their leading WR is brand new. If Leavitt was at MSU we’d be .500 at best. He’s in a better system with more talent around him. ASU is just a better team top to bottom.

As for our rushing game, it was 110th in the nation. That's awful. And even if Chiles is responsible for some of those sacks, he was still sacked 30 times. Our offensive line is garbage and has been for years. Idon't care if Carter & KLA padded their YPC is garbage games. We had 47 rushing yards against OSU, 59 against Oregon, MINUS 36 against IU and 103 against RU, a team that gives up 340 per game. If you take out the blown punt snap & Shuster's 4 sacks agains IU, we had a positive 29 yards rushing. Our run game sucks. Period.

I don’t read Spartan beat writers but so far, 3 of the 4 WRs entering the portal barely saw the field with Gates separating from the team back in October. With Mediocre Montori being the only guy running out of eligibility, that wasn’t likely to change.

It woud be better to have Leavitt than not but you have to be out of your mind to think this team is a QB away from even 6 wins or that ASU would be where we are without Leavitt.

Their top 3 wr's and top 3 rb's this year were on the roster last year. Their leading receiver was in fact on their roster last year and played in only 3 games and didn't have a catch before getting hurt. The guys they brought in didn't move the needle one bit as they were picked to finish LAST in the big 12 this year.

You're trying pretty hard to discredit Leavitt.

I'm not trying to discredit Leavitt at all. You're trying to reframe the argument - I've said multiple times I wish he would have stayed. I'm just saying you have to be out of your mind to think a guy who couldn't win at MSU is the sole reason a 3-9 team is in the playoffs a year later.

And your point about Tyson solidifies my argument - ok he was on the roster but he redshirted. He is basically a first year player at ASU. He's out for the season now, but if you're right about this success being 100% on Leavitt being an elite QB, that won't matter for the CFP. We'll see.

Five more players, mostly depth guys enter the portal:

DE Avery Dunn (probably the biggest loss of these 5)
OL Dallas Fincher (played 117 snaps this year at guard, can't be too good)
TE Ademola Faleye (low end of a pretty average position group)
LB Aaron Alexander (if you can't beat out Haladay, you probably don't even belong in the MAC)
DB Philipp Davis (hasn't seen the field in his 2 seasons with the frequent flyer zone).

What are the biggest needs for MSU?
In order of importance (in my view)
OL
QB
DBs (that stay healthy)
DT - we weren't terrible here and I'm not sure how we look for next year but it may be the most underrated/unsung position in CFB. I would rather have a beast or two there than an elite edge rusher. If you have elite interior DLs, they can make your edge rusher's jobs a lot easier, and make them look a lot better. Kind of like how elite WRs often make QBs look better.
Also, anyone not named Cal Haladay

Not to mention we don't have a starting rb. I'd really like to see them bring in a speedy slot wr as well. I honestly can't think of any position I feel they're set at. If they don't bring in 10 starters from the portal this team won't be much better.

Charles Brantley enters the portal - for the 3rd time. I'd be surprised if it wasn't for real this time.

don't know what I was thinking leaving RB off the short list - easily a top priority need with little more than a local 3 star true freshman. I guess the kid did get an offer from Alabama but it's Kalen DeBoer Alabama and when was the last time a freshman TB came in and lit it up?
